She is sure to pick up some splinters in her bum and back. One cannot expect a fresh smooth cross for such a worthless wench!!!
Great series, like the new angles showing different aspects of the raising. Look forward to seeing the tying of the feet. Are there any plans in nailing her to the wood as mentioned in the original story?

No, this particular episode is the only glimpse we get of Lucilla, and that is through Sabina's eyes. We know in general that she's been through this kind of thing five times already, and we know that the plans are to crucify her five more times after this with ropes, and then one last time using nails. But all kinds of things could happen between now and then.

And who knows what her mental state might be by that time? Rather than being defiant, she might be mad as Ophelia, picking flowers along the way to her cross.
 
it reminds me of a report of an Afghan girl who'd committed some crime against the honour code,
her sentence was to be whipped with 100 lashes, hard labour for 5 years, then to be executed - hanged I think,
but whatever way, she'd surely have been looking forward to it.
 
The executioners continue to lift Lucilla's cross, angling it down into its hole. Lucilla braces the soles of her feet to try to take the sudden jolt she knows is coming, but as the cross nears vertical, it becomes harder and harder to do. Sabina describes what she saw:

Unable to support herself with her feet, each jolt sent Lucilla’s body sliding farther down the wood. Each slip downward drew a whimper of fear from her as she anticipated the final drop and the pain of the impact. And then her arms were stretched tight against the ropes that held her wrists.

She balled up her fists and struggled to brace herself. When the cross reached its highest point, it suddenly tipped forward and plunged the final two feet into the hole. Her whimper turned into a scream of panic when she felt herself falling, and then there was the solid deep thump and rattle of the cross as the heavy timber hit bottom.​

I've often wondered how often the process of crucifixion dislocated shoulders. Can you imagine hanging on a cross with a dislocated shoulder? It would be almost as bad as nails. :eek:

It would certainly speed up the victim's death. It would be hard to keep raising herself without the aid of her arms, and I'm not sure you'd be able to manage much with a dislocated shoulder. That was one of the dumber things in The Passion of the Christ, where they pulled Jesus' shoulder out of joint in order to fit the nail into an existing hole in the patibulum. There was that, and then they showed him bleeding out more blood than the human body contains.

The thing I found silliest was how Jesus was beaten to pulp and the two thieves were left pale and perfect.
 
Lucilla took a moment to mentally prepare herself for what was coming before she lay back on the cross and submitted herself to the executioners.

Her upper body is stretched beautifully.
Her legs have a wonderful careless look to them, one knee bent and foot onthe wood, the other casually lying beside the upright, casually exposing her shaved sex.
A whole story in one frame :)

When I created that I was looking for a way to frame a shot with another victim's nailed feet. With a 3D scene, you can move a camera around, looking for the most dramatic shots just like a photographer moving around the scene would do.

In this shot, I'm showing how the work in progress will end. I wanted to reinforce the idea that this is where she'll be when the executioners finish their work with her. Not nailed this time, but her legs that are in a relaxed position now will be bound to the cross soon, unable to move except within the limits of her ropes.

In that scene, I especially liked this one:



I really liked her expression as she watches her wrist being bound to the cross, kind of fear mixed with disbelief. And in the background, there are the nailed feet of a crucified man, again showing what this scene is progressing toward.

Lucilla's cross dropped into its hole, but it kept travelling forward under its own inertia until it slammed into the forward edge of the hole and jolted to a stop. Lucilla's body, however, now hanging only by her bound wrists, kept going. Sabina describes what she witnessed:

The impact jerked her arms, shoulders and chest taut. Like a blow to the stomach, it drove the air from her lungs so that her scream was punctuated by something like a loud yelp before being cut off completely. Her shoulders must have felt like they were being torn out of their sockets. If her wrists had been nailed instead of tied, she surely would have fainted from the white-hot pain.

The cross continued moving under its own momentum, slowly rocking forward past the vertical until its front face struck the edge of the hole and stopped, leaning toward the crowd. Lucilla’s body continued to swing forward and back, hanging suspended by her wrists, feet flailing in the air, groaning in pain. All of the onlookers watched in silent fascination.​

This was a pretty dramatic moment as I imagined it and it took me three scenes to capture enough of Lucilla swinging by her wrists. I only had one scene done when I illustrated the book, and that scene now is the second one - I created another scene preceding it and another following it. These are maybe the top ten out of thirty renders I have just of this first scene.

With the cross leaning forward at an angle like that, I don't think she'd crash into it on the backswing, at least not very hard. Some of her body's velocity is due to the acceleration of the cross as it fell and rocked forward due to gravity, and some of it is the initial velocity it had when it came up and reached the tipping point. Like a pendulum, she's going to have some damping on each swing until she settles and stops, i.e. the back swing will be less than the forward swing was.

The two executioner's helpers could have kept the cross from travelling forward if they'd wanted. But that could have been dangerous for them and they might have gotten written up for a safety violation. :) The cross and victim together probably weigh around 300 pounds. Like any experienced construction worker, they'd know to get out of the way once that started falling - you don't try to catch heavy weights and edged tools. They might have been able to get themselves in position to catch it as it started to rock forward, however.
 
Lucilla's body, suspended only by her wrists, continues to swing back and forth, her legs flailing. Sabina is overwhelmed by the sight.

A shudder ran through me as I imagined what it must feel like to have this done to you, over and over, a dozen times. To be suspended like that, so helpless, your naked body utterly exposed to the eyes of people who took pleasure in watching you suffer the endless, unrelenting torture of the cross. What must that feel like?​

You can read the longing in her to feel what Lucilla is feeling. Seeing this girl being crucified is connecting with Sabina at the deepest level, setting her on a path from which she cannot turn back.

After a few moments, Lucilla gave up struggling, her body went limp, and she hung quietly by her wrists. The cross was still leaning forward and the executioners had made no attempt as yet to straighten it and fill in the hole around its base.





This scene was not in the story. I went back and created it afterward because I wanted to capture more of what would have happened in a scenario like this, where the cross is tipped forward leaving the victim hanging this way. If you were going to raise an entire cross by lifting it this way, I think there's a high risk of this happening unless the executioners were prepared to prevent it or cared.

And Lucilla, with her experience, would have known what was coming - not that it makes it any better,
she's hanging completely helpless, unless and until they tie her ankles or provide some kind of support.
