Public Executions In The Arena

Go to CruxDreams.com
For the 2001 Polish mini series, the scene was shot as written. Either Magdalena Mielcarz is very brave or director Jerzy Kawalerowicz is more willing to risk his actors' lives than Mervyn LeRoy was.
Stunt double? Combined with a (most likely historically incorrect) saddle adapted for the purpose.

BLANDINA 011.jpg

The slave Blandina is thrown by a bull in the arena at Lyon (Lugdunum), but the animal’s attack fails to kill her. Having endured unspeakable torture for several days, she has refused to deny her faith and, surviving the attack of the bull, is eventually stabbed to death, the final victim of the persecution of the summer of A.D. 177.

EUDOCIA OF TUSCIA

“Eudocia was a noble and pious woman from Tuscia, a region North of Rome comprising the Southern part of the former Etruscian empire. She was captured and led to the arena, where she was whipped to death for her faith in 306.”

Whipping to death, another form of execution we rather overlook on the Forums,
even in the Other Forms of Execution thread. In practice, I think it was probably
pretty common in Roman times, and at other times since. I have fantasies where
it's carried out slowly and methodically, allowing long pauses between periods of beating
so that it's by no means a quick death.

I often have fantasies about the competition between two Roman gladiators or arena torturers, in which they are challenged to whip two victims to death, but according to certain rules. That is, it could be as simple as who can whip their victim to death first, or it could be a contest where they are judged for the finesse and talent put into whipping their victim while keeping her alive as long as possible ... maybe something in between?

... one of the horrible aspects must be close to the end...
the executioner will step up, check ... "is it dead yet" (by that time the I'd look an 'it' I fear)...
No?
Some more...
step up again, poke, twitch.
Some more...
Nothing? Finished? Or still a rattle from the lungs?
...
:eek::eek::eek:
(personally, not really an arousing fantasy for me... I'd hope to 'check out early')

It's less complicated than crucifixion, certainly, those perhaps not less effort for the executioners..

But, as Sporus has shown us in another thread, crucifixion is not without its technical risks....maybe roman risk avoidance kept the flagellators busy

Great minds think alike Barb - so do our wicked ones
I wrote of just such a contest in one of Damian's 'Roman Decadence' booklets,
indeed, the aim was to land the maximum number of painful lashes before the victim died,
a good test of the flagellator's skill!

Here one has to make a distinction between 1) the so-called supplicium de more maiorum ('execution according to ancient customs'), rare, ritualized, carried out with rods, 2) flogging a slave or a humble person to death with a whip that, as far as I know, wasn't a part of law strictly speaking, but could be ordered by the competent holder of imperium in a particular case, and 3) 'mere' flogging gone too far. 1) and 2) could be pretty gruesome, there were mentions of beating through the muscle until the entrails fall out etc.

Nice pic Michele.
They're all nicely put together. Look at this one.
The man in front of her has plenty of weight to put behind his whip. The girl, so slim and helpless, grits her teeth and closes her eyes waiting for the next blow. Again and again the whip will beat and tear into her beautiful body, slowly beating the life out of her. A horrible death.

SCOURGING

scourging.jpg
Left, Short whip (flagrum) with lead balls and sheep bones tied into leather thongs. Center left, Naked victim tied to flogging post. Deep stripelike lacerations were usually associated with considerable blood loss. Center right, View from above, showing position of lictors. Right, Inferomedial direction of wounds.

SCOURGING PRACTICES
Flogging was a legal preliminary to every Roman execution, 28 and only women and Roman senators or soldiers (except in eases of desertion) were exempt. The usual instrument was a short whip (flagellum) with several single or braided leather thongs of variable lengths, in which small iron balls or sharp pieces of sheep bones were tied at intervals. Occasionally, staves also were used. For scourging, the man was stripped of his clothing, and his hands were tied to an upright post. The back, buttocks, and legs were flogged either by two soldiers (lictors) or by one who alternated positions. The severity of the scourging depended on the disposition of the lictors and was intended to weaken the victim to a state just short of collapse or death. After the scourging, the soldiers often taunted their victim.

MEDICAL ASPECTS OF SCOURGING
As the Roman soldiers repeatedly struck the victim's back with full force, the iron balls would cause deep contusions, and the leather thongs and sheep bones would cut into the skin and Subcutaneous tissues. Then, as the flogging continued, the lacerations would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles and produce quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh. Pain and blood loss generally set the stage for circulatory shock. The extent of blood loss may well have determined how long the victim would survive.

The teeth clenching and eye-closing part is so realistic ... I could so imagine myself doing that in such a horrible situation.
