DIONYSIA OF TUNIS SCOURGED

Dionysia was a Christian widow who lived with her son Maioricus in or near Tunis, North Africa. In 484 she and her sister Dativa fell victims to the persecution of the Vandal king Huneric, who was a Christian, too, but of the Arian denomination.
According to the legend Dionysia, Dativa, and other women were tied naked to stakes and cruelly scourged. During her ordeal Dionysia was heard to admonish her son to remain steadfast. Later the women were burned.

So, if I understand it well, ultimately, near the end, Christians were persecuting other Christians. They say, a religion is a sect with an army and a fleet (and with a police force and a law enforcement system for domestic uses). The circle was closed, and Dionysa and her friends bought it, not because they were Christians, but because they were wrong Christians!

EULALIA OF MERIDA TORTURED WITH TORCHES AND IRON HOOKS

Eulalia was a very young Christian woman in Merída (Spain). One day she went to see the trial of a Christian during the persecution of Emperor Diocletianus around 290–305 and there voluntarily proclaimed herself a Christian. Although she so young, she was tortured in public and killed in a extremely atrocious way: she was crucified naked on an X cross, and thus diplayed in public. Then the executioners played torches over her body and then lacerated her sides and breasts with hooks. Finally they lit a fire under her that burned her from below; she died from burning and inhaling the smoke. When she had expired, her corpse was taken down from the cross and left on the street as a final gesture of contempt. But a sudden snowfall covered her nudity.

Ah, the saint who stirred me so when I first read about her, a young girl the same age as I was then, tortured so exquisitely!
The story of Eulalia of Merida was told in epic verse by the fourth century poet Prudentius -
my poem is based on his version of the story, in which she's sent by her parents to a safe house in the mountains,
but runs away, back down to the city, and presents herself to the Governor, haranguing him for slaughtering Christians
and demanding they do the same to her. The Governor, frankly bewildered, tries to reason with her, but she just provokes him.
She responds to whipping and tearing with hooks with cheeky remarks, and is finally tied between two pillars
with braziers either side, and roasted till she's nearly dead (she shakes her long hair over the flames,
so it catches fire and speeds the process), then she's thrown out on the cold paving-stones of the Forum -
where her soul leaves her in the form of a white dove, and snow-shower hides her naked body.

Her cult was adopted in Barcelona (where Prudentius lived), and the account of her tortures was elaborated,
it's in the Barcelona version that the pillars are replaced with an X-cross.

LIBERATA OF SIGUENZA CRUCIFIED

The martyr Liberata was born in the Roman Era to a pagan king in Galicia or Lusitania (Portugal). She became a Christian and withdrew with her sisters from the court to the wilderness, where they led a simple and pious life, preached the gospel, and converted many people.
During one of the great persecutions, Liberata was arrested and executed for her faith in or near Sigüenza (Spain). The common belief is that she was crucified.

FEBRONIA OF NISIBIS TORTURED TO DEATH

Febronia was a nun of exceptional beauty living in Nisibis (today: Nusaybin, Turkey), a town in Mesopotamia. She was arrested during the persecution of Diocletianus in 304. The judge offered to let her go free if she would consent to return to the pagan religion and to marry his nephew. When Febronia declined, the irate judge had her tortured. It is said that she was tied to a cross and tormented with iron combs, her bones were broken, her breasts mutilated, and her tongue cut off. In the end she was beheaded.
Her steadfastness impressed many people to an extent that they became Christians themselves. The judge was struck with madness.
