Revenge of the Pulps

Some more pulp book covers:

London's Square Mile of Vice." Eulalia stay out of Soho,

Ah! Soho! I went to my first seedy dirty-mac cinema there, some film about bored housewives and randy plumbers. My mate dragged me in 'cos he was gagging for it, me I thought it all rather repititious. We were on a business trip to London from the Frozen North to, of all places, the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square, and 'had' to walk through Soho to catch the train.

A very special post
TheVelvetUnderground.jpg"Here is an incredible book. It will shock and amaze you. But as a documentary on the sexual corruption of our age, it is a must for every thinking adult." Published in September 1963, just as the sexual and cultural revolution was getting up steam. The book was an "investigation" (exploitation?) of the S&M underground in America in the early 60's. It was the real life story (of course sensationalized) behind the almost mainstream success of the Pulp Magazines. The Velvet Underground was republished in 1967 in the United Kingdom under the title Bizarre Sex Underground.

Filmmaker Tony Conrad found a copy lying in the gutter in NYC and passed it on to his friends Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison. They believed it would be an excellent name for the band they formed. Reed had already having written "Venus in Furs", inspired by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's book of the same name, dealing with sado-masochism. The lyrics were not by the Beatles or the Monkeys:
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn the imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there

[Chorus]
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now bleed for me

[Chorus]
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Another signature song was "The Black Angel’s Death Song", a torrent of words, melody, and screeching electric viola that, played once too often before puzzled audiences in Greenwich Village’s Café Bizarre, brought an abrupt end to their stint there in December of 1965. A typical verse was
Cut mouth bleeding razor’s
Forgetting the pain
Antiseptic remains cool goodbye
So you fly
To the cozy brown snow of the east

I bought their album when it came out in 1967, and went to see them perform at the "Electric Factory" in Philadelphia 1968. OMG. What a life changing sequence of events.

It seems to me The Velvet Underground - book and band - might deserve a thread of their own!
A fascinating glimpse of cultural history that's quite new to me - well I'd heard of the band,
but it was just a name ...

"Men" June 1964
MEN-JUNE-1964-600x781.jpg
"Tough Texan Who Freed Singapore's "One-Hour-to-Live" POWs" Editor's Love alliteration.
"Let's Stop The Soviet "Sea Rustlers" Who Rape America's Coastlines" I'll wager few of our younger readers with remember the Soviet raping along our costlines during the cold war. Crews from Soviet ships would come ashore from Key West up to Newfoundland and rape our helpless women. Actually this is referring to the 'factory ships' that would trawl the fishing grounds, especially the Grand Banks, stripping all the catch away from the local small boat fishermen. (Kathy - I'd expect people in your area still hold a grudge).
Cover: "Nazi Island Fortress that Surrendered to a single GI" I have not been able to learn anything more about the Island Fortress referenced. But the art is wonderful. The scantily-clad brunette in the front is nice to look at and pays the lie to the blurb's giving all credit to a single GI, She was probably crucial to 'distracting' the Nazis as the airman GI landed. His legs, up, casual american posture is priceless. Much detail is included in the uniforms.
"Sizzling $3.95 Best-Seller - Passionate Afternoons of Belle De Jour; Desire, Violence and Death in Paris" I left this for last. While many in my generation fell in love (lust?) with Catherine Deneuve in the 1967 movie (with a healthy dose of B&D; trailer:
whipping scene:
), it was an adaption of the 1928 novel by Joseph Kessel (who was also a member of the Académie française and Grand officer of the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur).

I learnt a lot of my French from Belle du Jour and films like that -
as well as l'Histoire d'O of course. Suddenly the boredom of irregular verbs
was replaced by new and exciting realms of meaning!

The thought of you learning French from those films. :very_hot:

Some different covers, leaving of the sex girls for a while (don't worry - not for long)
38671129-stag_196310.jpg"Phantom Texan Who Bottled up a Japanese Army (The incredible holdout that saved 10,000 American Lives)" It does sound incredible.
"Party Girls After Dark (New Twist in Big City Vice)" Come on everybody, let's do the twist!
"Under the Wall" (12 - hour sewer horror escape)" - Shawshank redemption prequel?
"Kidnapped by the FBI's Most Wanted Killer" Well, at least you know the police are going to give you case a high priority!
Cover: Only 17 survived (Heroism and Luck beat the Infamous "Atrocity Sub""
4348093864_d474e22ccd_o.jpg"The spy trap they baited with sex" Called a 'honey trap'.
"HMS Hampshire's$10,000,000 Gold Challenge (America's great locksmith cracks Britain's undersea Treasure)" Maybe this could help pay for Brexit?
Cover: Love Paradise of Sgt. Jerry Cable (Amazing True Adventure of a Marooned GI)" I don't see much love paradise there. The head on the pole does represent an interesting (but probably over-the-top) solution to brunettes who complain too much in his love paradise.

Cavalcade Oct 1961
Cavalcade-October-1961-600x794.jpg"Betsy Compton says: If you like oversized Busts You're a Mama' Boy!" 'nough said!
"Mr. Mudgett's House of Lost Women." What a helpful soul!
"Castro's Commie Plot to Take over Latin America" "A Call-Girl Tells about Sex in a Nudist Camp." "You can win a Million Dollars GAmbling in Penny Stocks" Whew! You can learn a lot of useful in formation here.
"The Beautiful Mankillers of Eromonga" Now they don't sound very friendly!
"Stuka Pilot! - He flew 2500 missions with one leg! Hitler's top Pilot!" A lot of exclamation points!
Cover: "Our mission...liberate the GI nurses...sex slaves of the Japs...Read: Operation Rescue Rape!" Why is it that nurses always make the best sex slaves? Operation Rescue Rape - sounds like a good Crux story title!
For something completely different:
"American Manhood" - The Virile Magazine
8464320490_e86c835727_h.jpg"You don't have to be weak and underweight" Thank you, I'm saved!
"The Unknown American Indian" - buried in Arlington?
"My Personal Jungle Adventures" Not somebody else's
"What you should know about sex" - It can be really, really, really nice!

"Stuka Pilot! - He flew 2500 missions with one leg! Hitler's top Pilot!" A lot of exclamation points!
Hans Ulrich Rudel has been the highest decorated german soldier and the only stuka pilot with more than 2500 missions (the next best had about 1300), but did he lost his right lower leg only a few weeks before the end of the war. Although he flew the last four weeks of war again, it was only for a few missions.
Now I am dubious about the substance of the rest of these stories!

Man's Epic April 1965
5719583336_984a95a2d2_o.jpg"Sex Fantasies - The Dreams that can make you Impotent!" Like girls being tortured by Nazis?
"Two First Person Exposes: I book passion parties; 'Call Girl' is the name of my trade." I'd love to expose both!
"Smothered by an avalanche of passion." Sounds great until you find out she weighs 625 pounds and likes it on top!
Cover: Here we come to the problem. I have resisted for a long time, posting this cover. "Soft Bodies for Hitler's Torture Master." I have no problem with the blurb - I love soft bodies for the torture master! What else are cruxgirls for? No, my problem if with the art. Yes, I'm am a Sadist and a pig. I get erotic thrills from seeing or imagining girls being horribly tortured (check what's happening to Eul in Nurse these days). But even I have my limits. The one-eyed officer is CUTTING HER HAIR! This wonderful sexy girl is having her hair cut off. This is beyond the pale for me. But I posted so that you can judge for yourself.

As part of my continuing (and clearly futile) effort to raise the tenor of this thread and the whole sorry forum and to provide some culture and uplifting knowledge to the unwashed masses here, another great quote:
