I always thought the rule was two syllables or less used the -er ending, and more syllables used "more". But, grammar is really statistics--what do most people say. And "direr" is harder to say than "more dire". (Most people nowadays would have said "the shit doesn't seem to be that deep" anyway--more words, but it has more color for sure.)
