Pleasure In Suffering

It is often forgotten that the landscape of 1st century BCE Germania was dominated by mountainous sand dunes, insurmountable barriers to the advance of Rome's legions oh what the hell she’s hot Markus.:babeando::very_hot::rolleyes:.

I stand corrected. ;)

Swamps, numerous unbridged small rivers, lack of roads, etc. etc.............

Really Rome's problem was maintaining garrisons beyond the Rhine due to Germanic civilization being much less centralized than "civilized" cultures. It took quite an infrastructure to maintain a Legion and without major population centers or an efficient transportation network it was impractical to try and conquer the "Germans".

Rome was very effective in launching punitive expeditions across the river and even 'hot pursuit' missions were possible. Staying just wasn't worth the cost.

Sort of like Afghanistan.

Better to buy off one Germanic chieftain against another ... whenever possible ... keep them occupied and off balance ... less costly in the long run.
