I wonder if the 'builder's bum' jeans and croppy t-shirt just happened to reveal that tattoo,
or was she a little more conscious of the camera behind her than you've inferred?

Thanks for raising this, Eul - it is certainly an interesting question.

If Alice was frustrated by the persistent deletion of her tattoo from her modelling series, this might have been an opportunity for her to present it consciously to a photographer working outside the glamour genre. The video soundtrack includes the sounds of the cameramen's footsteps in the undergrowth, and so Alice would have known that Makar was somewhere behind her.

Alice's jeans are south of her pantyline as she sits on the stool, and she appears to be without underwear.
But she needs to be capable of removing her clothing in a matter of seconds, to be ready for her next crux elevation.

The resting girl would be expected to stay out of shot so that the cameras could obtain unobstructed views of the crucified girl. Alice is directly in the line of sight between Makar and Koshka, although Makar would ordinarily be closer to Koshka than this to photograph her crux action.

I tend to think that if the shot was deliberately set up, Alice would probably have remained undressed, and posed nude for the picture.
But Makar has obtained two pictures here in which the subject in focus is Alice rather than Koshka.

And so, I think we can only speculate about whether or not the 'Contemplation' pictures were consciously posed or incidental, since either of these options would be consistent with Makar's style. :confused:

Thanks for the quick question, Apostate - I will endeavour to provide a succinct answer.

I combined features of the hair, taken in sections from both of Makar's pictures, using a little smudging, rotation and digital overpainting to blend it all together.

The twelfth anniversary of the filming of 'Alice and Koshka in the Crux Forest' provides us with an appropriate opportunity for contemplation. The timeless pictures, taken a dozen years ago, continue to yield sources for fresh crux manipulations by numerous artists, including most recently, Jollyrei, MahaShiva and GoatJr. Additionally, in the last few months, we have also seen 3D figures, inspired by Alice, from L'bogo and jucundus, as well as an impressive series of pencil sketches by jimsac. And recent manips by Damian, Melissa, Messaline, Cypher and others further endorse the popularity of Alice's glamour sessions as sources for both crux and non-crux themes.

The range of Alice-inspired artwork has expanded to the point at which it is no longer unusual to see her fully clothed. She appeared in First Century, Judean garb in 'Alice Barabbas' by Wragg, and several scenes from 'Barbarossanova' and elsewhere show her in contemporary dress. Ironically, the only authentic, published image of Alice fully clothed, of which I am aware, is by the very photographer who recorded her nude crux performance. Makar's 'behind the scenes' views from the 'Crux Forest' show Alice in a rear view, as she observes Koshka performing a stint on the cross. These are entitled, 'Contemplation' and 'Contemplation of Crucifixion', respectively -


I have previously commented that these pictures also present a rare view of Alice's dorsal tattoo, which was frequently deleted from her modelling pictures. Rarely do we see a candid picture of Alice, relaxing unselfconsciously, between sessions, smoking a cigarette, apparently unaware of the camera. But of course, she was aware of the fact that Makar was taking pictures, behind her, whilst Koshka was performing as the crux girl in the distance. The two pictures are seconds apart - Koshka has moved, but Alice remains transfixed.

In many ways, this is a defining moment in the middle of the session, since these are the images which indicate a willing participation on the part of the actresses. This moment is timed at 2.29 pm on Wednesday 20 June 2007. The 'Crux Forest' session was filmed over a period of three hours, starting at about 12.40 pm, to produce just over an hour and a half of video, as well as the accompanying photo series. Alice was on the cross at 2.22 pm, and then she took the break recorded in the 'Contemplation' pictures. She was back on the cross by 2.37 pm, and allowing for the time taken for dismounting and remounting, her break was probably no more than twelve minutes long.

We can see that her clothing is conducive to a quick change - just a pair of over-long jeans with large turn-ups, a T-shirt and a pair of flip-flops on her feet. She probably wore nothing underneath, but these few items were sufficient in case of an emergency, such as the approach of woodland hikers or dog-walkers. Koshka would also have had quick-change clothing, and the cross ropes were obviously arranged to facilitate pulling the hands and feet out quickly, if the need arose to jump down in a hurry. Only Imagemaker can say whether or not this actually occurred!

Having revised my opinion of Alice's awareness of Makar taking her picture, I decided to develop the theme for this year's anniversary manipulation, to show her turning to face the camera. This makes for an unusual Alice manip. Now she is quite recognisable, in a crux manip, but fully clothed and not crucified. All the components were sourced from Makar's 'Crux Forest' pictures, which allowed me to expand the vista to widescreen aspect. Changing the angle of alignment of Alice's upper body produces the necessary turning movement in her shoulders, so that the inserted head blends into a natural position. The join is largely disguised by her hair. Colourising the original black and white photograph was achieved by selective colour adjustments using multiple layers in Photoshop. The finished picture contains fifty-six visible layers and is entitled, 'Contemplation of Crucifixion 2'.


The portrait of Alice is sourced from the photograph taken by Makar, just after the end of the session, at 3.47 pm. It looks almost like an afterthought, and it has a natural, snapshot quality. We can imagine him calling to her, so that she looks up, tired after an unusual afternoon's work of physical exertion. There are dark rings below her eyes. Apart from the green tint, which affects all Cruxdreams photos taken in the forest (and is a nightmare for manipulators) the only hint of colour is the pink lipstick, which she wore throughout the session.

This portrait is used as Alice's identifying thumbnail in the Models List on the Cruxdreams website. My Photoshop enlargement has smoothed out the pixellation and provided warmer colouring, reducing the darkness below the eyes and the contrast of the lipstick. Alice is no longer acting or posing here, and her enigmatic expression seems to suit my version of the 'Contemplation' picture. I think she looks pleased with her performance, relieved that the session is over, and she doesn't really want any more pictures taken. She has worked hard, and she was wonderful, but she would never do anything like this again.


OK, for starters your dedication to the topic knows no rivals, and your meticulous approach leaves me in awe. On top of which your manip is insanely good, looking for all we can tell to be a genuine photo from that session. Absolutely astounding.

I've always loved those photos, I love the behind the scenes stuff and this particular one always made me think of, say, a niece watching her aunty crucified or some such, as Koshka's fuller figure more naturally gives her a mature look. I love what you've done with this wonderful source material.

This collection remains popular today, the statistics showing 1,178,664 picture views to date - a current average of 308 picture views every day with 5 favourites being added to members' collections daily. Visitor numbers over the last month average 29 daily. For a gallery which received its last submission on 26 July 2011, the figures speak volumes.

Alice's first appearance on Deviantart was in Makar's candid behind the scenes rear view, entitled, 'Contemplation of Crucifixion'. This was taken at 2.29 pm on 20 June 2007 and Makar submitted the monochrome version to his gallery the same day. Alice is identifiable from the Chinese tattoo on her lower back, visible between the tight jeans and T-shirt. She sits, between shoots, cigarette in hand, observing Koshka on the cross, her svelte form accentuated by the vertebrae showing through her top. Makar observed that this was the only picture he had of Alice with clothes on. It may be the only one of her on the Internet in which she was unaware of the camera.

Some more pictures from the Makar-ImageMaker Cruxdreams set, which established Alice's reputation as an icon in crux photography and subsequently in manipulations. ImageMaker states that during the film shoot Alice mounted the cross several times, her longest endurance being fifteen minutes.

simply magnificent Alice ! She's naturally beautiful, but her sufferings on the cross increase by a factor 100 her beauty. See the torments on her face, all her genuine pain... Her poors arms muscles stretched in order to try to find a better position to breath...free breathing just a short moment...just a temporary relief but immediatly gravity rules the universe in general and the poor body of Alice in particular ! She can't struggle, arms and legs muscles are too weak to sustain the position for a long time. She has to surrender and to be again in a posture where oxygen can't enter wholly in her lungs. And the game will go again....breathing oxygen : a survival reflex ! But so hard. Such a pain.. And at the end, Alice will totally surrender ! No motion at the end of video. She has no more strength, but she has still to breath, she has still to suffer even she has not even energy to scream or cry. Pain is still here but she's unable to express, to externalize it. All the sufferings henceforth are concentrated in her mind and in her body. A spectator enjoying the show from the beginning can't hear Alice screaming, crying or simply even moaning, but he can guess all of that : muscles cells releasing lactic acid burning nerves termination, pain keep on being transmitted to her brain, lack of oxygen.... Alice's video is the State of the Art because it allies the beauty of this woman body, fragile (see her pubes shape, stretched too at a point you can't distinguish her pubic bone, see her ribs almost piercing her so thin tanned skin) and in the same time the internal strength of Alice who bear this torture - maybe to earn money in a country (Russia) where life is hard, maybe to feed her child ? No one knows what is her life and what are the reasons why she agrees to go on the cross....but what we know is that she deserves respect. She has an uncommon strength of spirit - like all Makar's models who were crucified indeed.

Thanks for your comments, Fred - Alice certainly has my respect for what she achieved on that day. :)

There has been some speculation about how much of this kind of session is acting, and how much is genuine pain.
The potential discomfort is there from the start, and this can certainly help to inspire a convincing performance.
The best qualities of acting and genuine suffering appear to blend into a single experience.

With each successive stint on the cross, Alice had a better idea of what to expect, although fatigue was catching up with her all the time.
There might have been an element of competition between Alice and Koshka - each observed the other's crucifixions, and both entered into the spirit of their ordeal.

The concluding suspension scenes might indeed have been the most painful to perform. Having to hang still, apparently lifeless and devoid of pain, in spite of the fatigue and the conscious desire to seek an elusive position of less discomfort - all of this might possibly have made the finale the most difficult part of the session.

about the video, Alice & Koshka : i could add that Koshka may be suffer potentially more than Alice according to his body heavier than Alice, her big breast and she's big boned, but her arms seem to have the same diameter. But Alice suffers with more "dignity" : less screams or low little screams... But her face is really stigmatized with pain, that's clear even she is less noisy than Koshka... Maybe in our subconscient, Alice appears more vulnerable because although she is adult of course, her body seems more "childish" : little breast, almost no tits, etc. She appears to be younger, and that conveys a kind of message : "she is so young, too youth to bear this torture"... Of course, Koshka deserves the same respect because bearing the ordeal of the cross is really an evidence of courage.
