Gypsy Rose Lee used to say that "you don't have to be naked, you have to think naked".

Looking back on pictures of that era (and pretty much everything before the 70s) it seems that the femfatals of the day took that concept to heart. The wearing of filmy suggestive clothing, the look on the face that said 'I'm thinking something naughty' or even more evocative 'You want to do what to me?' went a whole lot more to a woman's sensuality than today's "stars"

Thus there are almost no fully nude pictures of Gypsy Rose Lee -
she left her audiences wanting more.
This is about the nearest image to nudity I ever saw.

It’s a reminder that it’s a shame that color film came too late to show audiences that the It Girl was a flaming redhead.

Oops! These have been kicking around the net for years; technically not fakes, just misidentified.
Not Joan Blondell. There are other wider shots (I have them somewhere) showing the cars the girls
arrived in - cars from the mid-50s.

Joan was born in 1907 - this is her in 1932 - at her peak.



The nude is about the same age, but the photo was taken 20+ years later.
Plus common sense suggests she wouldn't behave that way in public.
She was one Warners' biggest stars, she made 10 films that year for them,
always teetering on the edge of exhaustion.

I've always fancied the nude girl looks more like Gloria Grahame, who did
have something of a wild rep.​
