Meanwhile, on a purely prurient and arguably despicable whim, I went searching for any accounts, rumors or slander that Mss. Bow and Brooks actually had a fling, and found none.
My own researches have also failed to find any evidence of Clara and Louise getting it together. Clara certainly had a reputation for enjoying sex, but most if not all the accounts (many of which are known to be false anyway) involve men (allegedly gangbangs in some cases). I kind of imagine Clara like the girl in the old porn movie Babyface, where a big group of men are lining up to fuck her senseless
As for Louise, there have always been rumours of the occasional lesbian encounter but, a hundred years after the fact, it's impossible to confirm or deny, so I'm happy to believe that she might have eaten pussy at some point (as might Clara, as this sort of thing was kind of fashionable among the Hollywood stars at the time)
The one name that does often crop up regarding Louise Brooks' possible lesbian encounters is that of Pepi Lederer. Pepi was definitely a lesbian, and a highly predatory one at that (one of many in Hollywood at the time) , with a reputation for pursuing young starlets. She was a close friend of Louise and there is a documented case of her spending time with her in an isolated cabin some time in 1928. The plan here was for Pepi to spend time away from any environment that would tempt any of her many addictions. However, one night it os alleged that Pepi got drunk and suggested to Louise that they "fool around a bit" and Louise is said to have responded along the lines of "if it will make you happy then go ahead". Apparently Louise is supposed to have claimed that the experience did nothing for her personally, but I guess we'll never know for sure, so we can dream and fantasise to our heart's content
The one thing that does seem to be certain though, is that Clara and Louise never ate each other so unfortunately that must remain purely fantasy (and a criminally missed opportunity for both of them)
We do know that Clara thought that Louise was very attractive though - it has been reported independently by many studio staff that she often commented that she thought Louise was "so beautiful"
There's quite a lot of material out there that details the lesbian relationships among the Hollywood stars of the era, though a lot of these have been written by modern-day feminist bloggers with an axe to grind, so their veracity is always going to be highly questionable. Having said that, these are definitely inspiring.
