Bondage / Captivity / Interrogation / Torture Scenes in Mainstream Movies

#1 is remarkable for two items: the correct fact that the branding iron is not red but just hot gray; and the incorrect that when she's branded, she screams and shows her dental filling.

Also the titles are by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python and instantly recognizable

As certainly known to his fans Robe-Grillet's movies always include scenes of bondage, chaining and whipping. To mention a few(in French original):
"GLISSEMENTS PROGRESSIFS DU PLAISIR"(1974), "L'EDEN ET APRES" (1970), "LE JEU AVEC LE FEU" (1975)
Those who've followed me know I'm a fan of Robbe-Grillet's films and novels -
I've posted quite a few times with shots and quotes - use Search
for keyword Robbe-Grillet, posted by Eulalia.

Thanks also for the review of Garage Olimpo, a very interesting and well-acted film.
I didn't know it was suppressed in USA, probably too embarrassing knowing the role of the CIA
in training torturers in such techniques in the School of the Americas.

Christopher Lee and gorgeous Israelian/American actress and singer Daliah Lavi were called for to cover the protagonists' roles.
In a gloomy manor lives a family whose components are an aged Count, his son Christian, Nevenka Christian's wife and their daughter Katia. An old butler and a woman housekeeper are the other inhabitants of the castle. Another son of the Count the wicked Kurt ,former lover of Nevenka, is meantime back home. Nevenka's attraction for Kurt is revived giving the start to a sharp turnpoint of the story as Kurt dies fo throat stabbing and chases Nevenka in dreamlike sequences where she is reminded of his night time visits and of the tortures he inflicted to her. New deaths after this occurr in the castle. Gothic atmospheres are guaranteed along with Christopher Lee's extraordinary
acting. Daliah Lavi is good too. A couple of scenes where she is whipped are worth seeing.

Thanks Eulalia for your notes on Robbe-Grillet : the other title I would like to review is 'C'ést Gradiva qui Vous appelle' but I have not decided as yet.

I share your comments on 'Garage Olimpo", except for the fact that US spectators , in our days should be able, somehow, to view it presumably not in theatres, but
in private vision only.

Very nice amount of simulated whipping and tons of cliched scenes and acting!:D

It strikes me looking a a bunch the movies here, that it is very strange they were ever made. They clearly appeal to a tiny group of sick perverts (the kind who frequent a site like CF) who want to see a beautiful woman stripped and whipped/tortured/killed. And many of that group (myself included) never patronized this movies out of shame and fear of being seen - even fear that the cashier/ticket taker would judge me as a pervert.
So how did they ever make any money? None of that 97% plus of normal men and women would have any interest in seeing that woman whipped so her back bled! They all are repulsed at the idea and at us few, sick, disgusting, twisted, evil, immoral, cruel, almost (maybe more than almost) criminal types who would be - OMG! - sexually aroused by it!
I'm a finance type. How did they ever make money if the above is true? And of course it must be true!

Must be a far larger group than you imagine ... :p

Another consideration comes from the fact that, since the girl under judgement apparently comes from the poor class, she should have had teeth in good order.
As a matter of fact the first enemy of dental health is sugar and his variations(sweets, candies, etc.) which, in 16th Century, had prices unaffordable by the poor people .
It is historically known that they lived mostly on stews, root vegetables, and leafy greens.

How to sell a movie?
Get a teasing poster!
fs1.jpg

‘Flesh and the Spur’ is a 1956 low budget B&W western, produced by American International Pictures (AIP). The story, is, well, about cowboys, obviously, since it is a Western. A cowboy hunts down the men who murdered his brother. Revenge, a classic theme in a Western. Underway, he meets an Indian women, played by Marla English.

Whatever! There is curious story about the poster. One day, during pre-production, the producers of the movie were summoned to the AIP headquarters. They were shown the poster that would be used to sell it. It showed English’s character, scantly clothed and tied to a stake, standing upon an ant hill. The producers replied that there was not such a scene in the script. So, AIP ordered them to include one (it seems to have been a common pre-sell practice).

The side story of the ant hill is that English is caught by members of her tribe, and gets punished because she has slept with a white man. The good guy is around, but exactly then, he is involved in the final shootout with the bad guys, so he has his own priorities! Will he come back in time to save his pretty companion to get her saved from being eaten slowly?

The ant hill scene is rather brief. Marla English is never shown from the front, as she appears on the poster. From close by, you only see her legs, or her anxious looks over her bare shoulders. There is one distant scene, rather blurred, and with some vegetation in the way, showing her from the back. The act and scenery suggest the Indians stripped her naked!

The backstory of the poster and the anthill scene is on Wikipedia, and many other sources

From which I recall this quote:
“Alex Gordon recalled dropping ants on the bound and gagged Marla. However, the ants would promptly run away from her. The ungagged Marla finally asked Gordon "Look, you've got six ants there, isn't that enough?”

I say no more! Just enjoy this beautiful gem of a woman in peril scene :

Just let me point out that in this clip, all the scenes of the ant torture were edited consecutively by the author of the clip. In the movie, they are separated by scenes of the final gunfight, which you can hear going on in the first half of the clip.

For those interested in the full movie, here is a link. The ant heap scene is in the last 10 minutes. Early in the movie, there is a scene where Marla English's character baths in a river (suggestd naked? this was the Code Era).

The killing hour (2).jpgThe killing hour (3).jpgThe killing hour.jpg"THE CLAIRVOYANT" (aka "THE KILLING HOUR") is a 1982 American thriller: The distinctive mark of a New York serial killer
is handcuffing his victims. Everything gets started after a girl's naked body with handcuffed wrists is found on the bottom of Hudson River. Other slayings(the victims are all men)after this one,are performed with exactly the same method. As it is frequent in this cases investigators follow many tracks but none of them leads to the actual
murderer. The film has elements of originality including the strange behaviour of a policeman/part time comedian investigating the crime. Lovers of 'giallo' would not
miss "THE CLAIRVOYANT" which require watching patiently the rather slow first part waiting for the amazing turn provided by the second half. Shackling and rape scenes
are included.

Her hopping about in that revealing purple bra is a sight to behold...

penumbra-2012-movie-image.jpg

Well that sounds and looks like some perfectly fine exploitation cinema, I must say.

If only I had been born at a different time, in a different place, etc., I would have had a long and happy career appearing in sexploitation films.

Interesting question posed by PP. At least to me. I often wonder about such things too....

Well, the group of moviegoers who would love to "see a beautiful woman stripped" is absolutely huge, as you know. Forget whatever may happen to her in the way of torture, etc. Just putting a naked beauty on screen for a few seconds is going to get some tickets sold.

And many of that group (myself included) never patronized this movies out of shame and fear of being seen - even fear that the cashier/ticket taker would judge me as a pervert.

Are you saying you never learned the old trick of having a couple of stiff drinks first, so that you don't feel so embarrassed at the ticket counter? :D

So how did they ever make any money?

All I know is there was a time when many, many towns across America had a theater or drive-in that regularly featured sexploitation films. Porn was a different matter, as many places didn't allow X-rated films to be shown. But there weren't any such regulations getting in the way of showing sexploitation films. The small (and quite conservative) town in Florida where I grew up even had such a drive-in up until around 1990. And back in 1970 or whatever, I imagine there often wasn't much else to do in many of these towns on a weekend night other than go to the drive-in to see whatever they are playing. Couple that with the fact that many of these films were made for under $100K, and the math starts to make sense.
