To reach the full potential as a martial arts practitioner, you must begin by training your mind. One way to accomplish this task is through Crux Meditation. Through Crux Meditation your awareness, calm, and focus will increase. ... Without calmness, you will not be able to focus or relax.

Crux Zen (Kurosuhangu Zen) is an ancient and powerful form of advanced meditation, hanging naked on a cross, your awareness is directed towards counting or watching the breath, allowing thoughts to arise and pass away without interference, and bringing awareness to the 'energy center' (sono basho, lit. 'that place') that is, er, a bit below the navel - a sedile may be used, with a cornu that helps direct awareness to 'that place'.

It is common practice in Zen meditation to whack students on the back with the keisaku , a "warning stick:" or "awakening stick" when their attention slackens. Often the stick will have calligraphy on it. Keisaku1.jpg That translates as "Pay attention, you lazy sluts!"

Sounds pretty much the same as what happens when called to Dean Darwin’s office ... you made the Zen stick bit up, didn’t you?

No, it's a regular part of rinzai zen, an especially tough form of zazen -
I've been told by a friend who spent a year in such a monastery,
it damn well hurts!
