Yes, it works, if your mission is to inflect intense, excruciating pain, male or female. Having experienced this position myself as a teenager, I can tell you the longer you're up there, the more you suffer. Of course, I was using ropes. I can imagen how much more intense it would be with nails. Try this at home if you like but stick to rope.

This position is a nice augment to the visual style of the crucified female and is also a preferred way to Punish or Torture My slaves as I have recently done so only with the addition of a small wedge saddle that supports the crotch.
As they suffer, their weight slowly bears down on the unforgiving edge.
It is unforgivingly cruel.

So I consider it unlikely that a crucifixion would have been a 'clean' event unless there was a special ceremonial reason to do so.

I cannot agree more with this point, so I also like to create some extra wounds on my female character during my rendering.
