It looks more Lutheran but what the fuck do I know...An early render by Fnhsr, redone as a stained glass window, which would surely grace any Catholic church, and certainly get the whole congregation excommunicated.

Short answer - yes. It's allowed for in Luther's Short Catechism, and does still happen in some branches or congregations -
most of what I see on the net relates to cases in the USA. One way in which it differs from the Catholic laws
is that the excommunication has to be agreed by the congregation, not just the Pastor. This has given rise to cases in the civil courts.
There's quite a wide range of Lutheran synods and subgroups in the USA ... some are conservative enough to be downright scary, but most are ok (for Lutherans, that is). In my part of the country, Lutherans are pretty thick on the ground ... try reading some of Garrison Keillor's stories about Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, and you can get a taste for it.
