They did that to make awarmess to avoid abortion I think.. but since that old times, there was crux fatish or idea ;)
A naked woman, pregnant and crucified like JC, light skin, whose whiteness is interrupted only by the shadow of the raven and the pubis, in the pale light hair is a dramatic figure and sweet at the same time. This image was baffling the Espresso cover of January 19, 1975 and the title was "Abortion: An Italian tragedy." As expected, it was a real bomb dropped in the tangle of the debate of those years on the subject, in an Italy clerical, backward and Democrat; Italy Moro government, the arrest of the Secretary Spadaccia and searches in newsrooms. It was the beginning of a season of social changes that would lead to Law 194 of 1978, by which abortion was legalized, then he defended the measure by referendum in 1981. The picture, of course, is true (at the time did not exist programs such as Photoshop) and, with it, the editor of the weekly magazine Livio Zanetti and photo editor Franco Lefèvre showed the courage of lions, and in return had a lot of criticism. The battle against illegal abortion, as well as that in favor of divorce, are clear examples of the fighting spirit and proud of Espresso in the seventies. That cover entered law in the history of investigative journalism and denunciation. All this and much more is offered by the exhibition at the Vittoriano, dedicated to the sixty years of Lucky magazine, inaugurated on October 2, on the day, in 1955, in which the first number. The curator is Bruno Manfellotto, which organized the material into eight theme rooms, taking advantage of the huge amount of documents: covers, drawings, sketches, traced by Tiziana Faraoni, the historical archive of the newspaper. Much space is devoted to the theme movies, coming from the Teche Rai, and video interviews of the protagonists of the weekly history, from the founding Arrigo Benedetti and Eugenio Scalfari to Roberto Saviano, by Alberto Moravia to Goffredo Parise and Giorgio Bocca. No shortage of "stronger covers" and famous, those dedicated to the ubiquitous mafia, the vampire Andreotti, to Kennedy, Craxi and Berlusconi, at the Twin Towers tragedy. There are many famous images and vivid but very present is also the writing and journalism writers lent to journalism. Scroll through the list of greats who have worked for the Espresso is amazing. ......
A real roundup of snapshots, photographic or narrated, how the country, the world and we are changed, a perfect way to witness the passion and the heart of those who investigated and struggled, writing the truth and allowing everyone to read. valuable exposure, dedicated to an Italian institution, an absolute must for those who want an objective look and sincere about the world around us.
P.S. the Espresso of January 19, 1975, immediately sequestered, now is valued 400 Euro on the market.

Thanks Luna, the detailed background really enhances the picture. Crucified women are also much more common in popular culture, although I suspect that a crucified pregnant woman still has the power to shock. Even here.

Some for the weekend (It's Friday here :) )
