The first and last ones are by an artist whose handle was the quite appropriate "Sade." From a series a long time ago that I think first appeared on Renderotica.

There is a movie 'Hero of Babylon", from 1963. It's one of these many Italian peplum movies from the time. I do not know whether it is based on Frichet's novel, but there is a whipping scene in it, on an X-cross that recalls the cover of the novel.

I've just found this ... a curious iron'cross ...

Made in St. Louis in the early 1900s... I hear it is still used on Anjou tours...

Really? It put in mind what an execution would look like in some sort of steampunk Roman Empire.

The cross is clearly "Made in Scotland, from girders"
