'Bloody' is a common profane intensifier in British English.

There is a cartoonist whose cartoon panels are posted somewhere on the site (can't think of his name), who used the bamboo growth idea in one of his cartoons in which an American WWII nurse is spread-eagled by her Japanese captors over spiked bamboo shoots.
