Hodges again gave thanks for the marvelous restaurant scene in Singapore. Where else do you find a Spanish seafood restaurant run by an award-winning Peruvian chef in the downtown financial district. He and Chunhua were enjoying their cocktails and perusing the mouth-watering menu.
The warmth of the greeting and the friendliness of the conversation gave Jeffrey hope that he could restart his affair with the sexy and submissive doctor.
As they were about to order, his phone rang. The number was unfamiliar, but the ID was for the Parliament Building.
Chunhua was shocked to see his face take on a look of horror. He stammered, “Yes! Oh My God! Where? Raffles Hospital? I’ll be right there.”
He started making incoherent apologies to Chunhua while standing up and knocking over his drink. “It’s my assistant, Amanda Jones. She’s in Raffles Hospital. She been raped!”
Chunhua jumped up too. “I’ll come with you, Jeffrey.”

Emergency Room, Raffles Hospital, Monday, 1:12 PM

A short taxi ride to the hospital, a short wait at the Emergency desk (expedited by Chunhua flashing her medical credentials), and Jeffrey and Dr. Liú were shown to where Amanda was. Two brightly uniformed officers, with prominent sidearms, were standing guard outside her curtained bed. When the two had identified themselves to the guards, the senior officer, who appeared Eurasian, introduced himself as Lieutenant William Lee of the Parliamentary Guard.

“My God. What happened to her?” pleaded Jeffrey, barely keeping himself together.
“The incident is still under investigation in cooperation with the Central Police Division. But I can tell you what appears to be known at this point.”
“Please do, Lieutenant,” said Chunhua, holding tight on Jeffrey’s arm to steady him. She was tempted to request some tranquilizers from the staff to give him. He was deathly pale.
“It seems that Miss Jones was walking across Parliament Square a little after eleven this morning when she was accosted by two agents from the CNB, the Central Narcotics Bureau. The incident was observed by two members of the Parliamentary Guard, who intervened to determine whether there was a problem. The CNB agents identified themselves to the guards and said they were questioning Miss Jones for possible drug possession.
“That’s impossible!” shouted Jeffrey. “Amanda would never dream of having anything to do with drugs!” Chunhua patted his arm and tried to calm him.
“You may well be correct, sir. We also have doubts about the charge,” replied the Lieutenant. “However, you must understand the deference paid to CNB agents in Singapore. The fight against drugs is of the highest priority. Therefore, our guards allowed the agents to take the girl... young woman (excuse me, sir, but she does look quite young), into a rest facility for questioning. Our guards stayed in the vicinity as a precaution.”

“Then what?” Jeffrey asked urgently.
“Several minutes later, Captain McGregor of the Guards appeared on the scene and was disturbed to hear a girl’s, excuse me, a woman’s cries from inside the restroom. He took the two guards with him and entered. There he found Miss Jones, partially undressed, handcuffed, and on the floor while the two CNB agents were on top of her, naked. One of them was apparently having intercourse with her as she screamed loudly for help.”
“My God, My God!” Jeffrey buried his face in his hands and wept uncontrollably.
“I’m very, very sorry, sir. The Captain immediately took both agents into custody and summoned an ambulance for the young woman. She was brought here and appeared not to be suffering from any life-threatening injuries.”
“My God!” Jeffrey kept saying.

“What about the agents?” asked Chunhua.
“It transpired that one was unresponsive at the scene. The EMTs began treatment and he was transported to Singapore General Hospital, the old British Military Hospital. The other has been placed in a holding cell at Parliamentary Guard Headquarters. As I said, an investigation has been started jointly with the Guards and the Police Special Cases unit.”

“May we see her now,” asked Dr. Liú.
“Let me ask the Doctor to come out and talk to you. It’s his decision.”
“Of course. Thank you.” Chunhua held Jeffrey tightly to calm him down. He was sobbing uncontrollably.
The officer stuck his head inside the curtain, said a few words, and a doctor emerged.
“Good Day. I am Dr. Chen,” said the short, gray-haired Chinese Doctor.
Chunhua introduced herself and Jeffrey, who wasn’t yet able to say much.
“Let me first reassure you that Miss Jones is in no danger," said Chen in a soft, gentle voice. "Her injuries, though painful and rather unpleasant to see, are minor and will heal with no problem.”
“Thank God,” whispered Jeffrey.
“Her mental state, however, is very agitated. Not only from the traumatic after-effect of the sexual assault, but she seems extremely concerned over some noon deadline. I have just prescribed chlorpromazine. She will be sleeping soon. Until then, you may speak with her.”
“Thank you, doctor,” said Chunhua, supporting Jeffrey. Chlorpromazine is extremely powerful, she thought. How severe was Amanda’s mental trauma? She looked to Jeffrey and knew she shouldn’t tell him that. “Mr. Hodges is most distraught. Could he have a diazepam?”
“Of course,” said Dr. Chen, turning to a nurse to order the medication.

As they were about to enter, the Lieutenant stopped them. “Mr. Hodges, Dr. Liú, I cannot express the distress this incident has caused to the Parliamentary Guards. That such a heinous crime might take place in broad daylight on the peaceful and hallowed grounds of our Parliament is a grave insult to every member of the Guard. I can personally promise you that we shall investigate this thoroughly and prosecute the guilty in our special parliamentary court. And any members of the guards who were complacent or negligent will be dealt with most harshly. Please accept my sincerest apology.” With that, he bowed deeply. When he stood back up, Chunhua noted tears in his eyes.
“Thank you, Lieutenant. You have been most kind. She turned and took Jeffrey by the arm and guided him inside the bedcurtain.

As they entered the bedside area, Jeffrey looked at the girl lying in bed and cried out, “GOD!” Just then, a nurse appeared with a tablet and water. Dr. Liú made Jeffrey swallow the medicine immediately and then turned to Amanda. She was a disturbing sight. Several dark, black and blue bruises covered her face, and there were several stitches evident in her lower lip. Her bare arms above the blanket had multiple contusions. Dr. Liú recognized at once the sign of a rape victim. The other typical signs, bruising and tearing on the thighs and vagina, were, naturally, hidden by her blanket.

The moment Amanda heard Jeffrey, she burst out in loud sobs, crying, “Mr. Hodges, I’m so sorry! I tried, but I screwed up! I’m Sorry! I failed!! I let you and Barbara down! I can't stand it! I’m SO Sorry!!!”
The bedside nurse and Chunhua restrained the girl as the nurse glanced at the IV drip. The sedative should take effect very soon, Chunhua thought.
“Oh, Amanda,” cried Jeffrey. It’s not your fault! It’s mine. I should have gone with you. Oh my God!” Chunhua worried that she had two historical patients together. Fortunately, both had been given medication.
“But, I’ve let down Barbara Moore!!! I’ve screwed it all up!! I’m sorry!” Dr. Liú heard the girl’s voice weaken. She looked in her eyes and saw the drug acting. Soon, very soon.
“Oh, Amanda!” cried Jeffrey again.
“I’m sorry,” the girl whispered and then mercifully closed her eyes.
“Amanda!” cried Jeffrey.
“It’s OK, Jeffrey, she’s just sleeping. The drug the doctor gave her has calmed her down. It’s for her good”
Jeffrey sat on the bedside stool and held Amanda’s hand, weeping.

Dr. Chen reentered and took Chunhua aside.
“Your friend seemed too upset to hear this. I assume you’ll pass it one when appropriate?”
“Of course.”
“Well, not surprisingly from the eyewitness reports, the rape examination was positive; semen was present on her labia as well as inside the vagina. Also, there was a large amount of blood. It is my opinion, from the physical evidence, that the girl was virgo intacta before the assault. Naturally, a rape kit was taken and will be provided to the police.”
“Thank you, Dr. Chen,” Chunhua handed him her card. “Could you please send a copy of your report to me?”
Chen looked at the card and then respectfully at Chunhua. “Of course, Chief Surgeon Liú!”
There is a wonderful air of potential peril that constantly flows through PrPr's writing, but equally the more 'panoramic' nature of the storyline is just brilliant. Trust Jeffrey to visit someone in hospital and then require treatment himself. He really is hopeless! And poor Amanda, distraught because she's let people down. Bless - she really is an Angel!

Terrific stuff as always.

I think I'd quite like to see Chunhua flash her medical credentials at me too :)

And poor Amanda, distraught because she's let people down. Bless - she really is an Angel!
Indeed. Beaten to a pulp, raped violently, her virginity ripped away! And yet all she can think of is Barbara and how (through, of course, no fault of hers) she has been let down! Go, Cheerleaders!

“Mr. Hodges, I’m so sorry! I tried, but I screwed up! I’m Sorry! I failed!! I let you and Barbara down! I can't stand it! I’m SO Sorry!!!”

Yes, Amanda, you let me down! Sigh! You should have been Moore careful. I certainly would have been.

Nothing ever goes right for me in this story, does it?

You should have been Moore careful. I certainly would have been.
Like the way you were with those cops and your chewing gum back in Singapore I? That's what started this whole convoluted tale. Actually, looking at it that way, its Barb's fault that Amanda got raped! You should apologize to her.

Let's just hope that the bag of drugs gets forgotten in all the mess of the rape. Would Rogers and Jiang accuse Amanda fo being a drug dealer to get off of their charges? I hope not.

Of course they will ... I have premonitions, you know. And the one I am having right now is telling me that I may well be required to share my cell with Amanda before this is over.

I don’t know which would be worse ... the twenty strokes I still have to endure, not to mention my execution ... or listening to bubble butt tell me how sorry she is to have failed to deliver those documents on time, but not to fret because good things always happen ... rah rah rah ... blah blah blah.

Providing Rogers recovers then I think he's capable of anything!

That would be too cruel on poor Amanda, but if PrPr is feeling sadistic, she may get half a dozen over that caning frame as a prelude to the main event.
I love an optimist,if you think you will get away with only 20,good luck. The "smart" money is on 23,and that will be much worse than sharing a cell with Amanda, and you should know!

Rodgers and Jiang will say anything too get off.
Surely you are not implying that two officers of the CNB would dream of telling an untruth??

Maybe I should start a countdown clock. How many hours until next flogging, How many until execution?

Those automatic weapons are full-loaded (and those short bayonets have very sharp points).

But such a shame to get those white tunics dirty. I think it’s all show and no go. Planning my escape, should I get the chance, through the Palace.

Easy for you to say, but just try to juggle all these characters and plot lines. I'm considering putting a large flowchart on the wall to keep up with everything happening!
I almost forgot to torment Barbara. But don't worry, evil is coming!

Empat Puluh Tiga

Emergency Room,
Raffles Hospital, Monday, 2:03 PM

Chunhua let Jeffrey sit and grieve for a while. After about forty minutes, she urged him to his feet. The Valium had taken full effect, and he was far calmer, though seemingly in a daze. Amanda was resting peacefully.
As they passed out through the curtain, Dr. Liú noted two men were coming down the hall toward them. One was a shorter, older man dressed in gray with a gray mustache. The other was much younger, above average height, and wearing a uniform similar to the guards on Amanda. Neither was familiar to Chnuhua.

“Mr. Hodges. Miss?” the old man asked.
“Dr. Chunhua Liú. I am a friend of Mr. Hodges.”
“Very pleased to meet you, Doctor. I am Detective Inspector Frost of the Special Cases Unit of the Central Police Division. Chief Inspector Musa bin Ibrahim of the Parliamentary Guards. We will be working together investigating the assault on Miss Amanda Jones.”

“Pleased to meet both of you,” said Chunhua, handing each man one of her cards. Frost read it, and his eyebrows went up.
Chunhua continued, “The attending has just given Miss Jones a strong sedative, and she will not be available for questions for at least four hours.”
“Yes, thank you, he already informed us. May we ask you a few questions?”
“I have no knowledge except that I was with Jeffrey when he was called here. I have never met Amanda before. Jeffrey is, as you must know, her employer.”

“Yes.” said the younger detective. “Mr. Hodges, can you give us any idea why Miss Jones was in Parliamentary Square at midday this morning?”
Jeffrey looked at the men in a daze. His speech was slow and halting. “She…she was on an errand for me. Going…she was going to the Supreme Court to…to…”
Chunhua jumped in, “Detectives. I apologize, but I gave Mr. Hodges a mild tranquilizer almost an hour ago. He was extremely distraught. It should not affect the accuracy of his answers, just the speed and clarity.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” said the tall detective, smiling at her. “You are very helpful.” Frost looked askance at the young man and then back to Jeffrey.
“What was she doing for you, Mr. Hodges?”
“She was taking...taking papers to court…for my client...for Miss…Moore…Barbara Moore.”
Frost’s face went from impassive to astonishment in a fraction of a second. Could this be related to the Moore case? He wondered.
“Mr. Hodges, to your knowledge, was Miss Jones a drug user? Specifically, cocaine?”
“No!...Certainly not!...Impossible...She’s…she’s so good..”
Musa added, “We only ask, Mr, Hodges because there is a video…” Frost put his hand on the young man’s arm and shook his head. “Not now, son.” Back to Jeffrey, “Very good. Mr. Hodges. Just one more thing, and we will let you go. Have you ever heard of the two CNB agents who are accused of, ahem, assaulting Miss Jones? Let’s see here,” he looked at several scraps of paper wedged in various pockets until he found what he was looking for. “Yes, Constable Zhihoa Jiang?”
“No, ah…no, never heard of him.”
“And,” looking at another scrap. “Lieutenant Jimmy Rogers?”
After about a second, Jeffrey came out of his daze with his eyes wide open. “Jimmy Rogers! That fucking scumbag! He did this to her? Oh, God! Where is he? I’ll kill the bastard!!”
“I’m afraid you are too late, Sir.”
“What? Where is he?”
“Lieutenant Rogers was found unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital from an apparent heart attack. Naturally, there will be a post-mortem to establish the cause of death definitively.”
“Dead? The bastard’s dead! May he rot in hell!”
The detectives gave Hodges several minutes to compose himself and then asked how he know Lieutenant Rogers.

Jeffrey, partially shocked out of his stupor, told them the complete story of the detective appearing for the first time at Barb’s trial. At that, Frost remembered seeing Rogers testify - he had forgotten until now, the agent’s name) Jeffrey stated emphatically his opinion that Rogers lied to incriminate Moore. Frost stored that idea away for future consideration.
Then Hodges recounted the Prison reception where Rogers had practically assaulted Amanda in front of everybody. Finally, he explained that Amanda was taking papers that had to be filed by noon and that the confrontation and assault prevented that, doing grave harm to Moore’s appeal.
Frost thanked them both for their cooperation.
Musa spoke up for the second time, seeming to direct his remarks more at Chunhua than Jeffrey. “Mr. Hodges, Dr. Liú, I have been instructed by the highest level of the Parliamentary Guard of Singapore, to tell you that no effort will be spared in getting to the bottom of this heinous and despicable crime. All responsible parties shall be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in the special Parliamentary Courts. Any complicit or negligent individuals in the Guard will be dealt with most harshly.”
He put his right hand over his heart. “I swear this to you!”
“Ahem, Yes. The same from me,” mumbled Frost, who hated emotional displays.
“You may go. Thank you.”

As the two walked away, Frost looked at Musa and placed his finger beside his nose. “So, one of our random rapists was involved in the case that Miss Jones was working on? Makes you wonder, ay lad?”

Curiouser and curiouser ... And Jimmy Rogers dead! Died on the job too lol! Is Jeffrey finally manning up!

Exciting chapter PrPr, wonderful read.

Wow, is she ever good ... the little twerp has everyone fooled!

PrPr’s writing is a wonder in my humble opinion!
