The ugly face of GESTAS shows his suffering after being scourged and pierced his wrists and feet with nails. Sometimes we forget the excruciating pain and humiliating shame that the two thieves suffered also at Calvary

In the picture, DISMAS' face displays the suffering he is enduring because of the cruel scourging and the feet nailing, but at the same time displays his own internal peace he has received from Christ when our Lord has promised him Paradise
