Manipulations by Hammers

A very apocalyptic scene!?
This is a manipulation of one out of five paintings of the series denominated "The Course of Empire" created by the English-born American painter Thomas Cole (1801-1848)
in the years from 1833 to 1836. It is precisely "Destruction" (please see attachments ) which was probably inspired by Vandal sack of Rome in 455 AD:

Nice! What's the Original?
The painting's name is "THE DEATH OF VERGINIA" a work by Francesco De Mura (Naples 1696-1782) painted around 1760, housed by the Manchester Art Gallery (UK).
The story of Verginia takes place in 451 BC: she was a beautiful plebeian girl and the daughter of Lucius Verginius a respected centurion. The decemvir Appius Claudius
fell for Verginia but he was rejected. In revenge Appius Claudius had Marcus Claudius, one of his clients, claim that she was his slave and abduct her. The crowd on the Forum objected to this and pretended to bring the case before the decemvirs. Verginia's father was summoned to defend her but he was not allowed to speak and was even accused of sedition together with the citizens supporting him. As Verginius understood that there was no way to uphold his daughter's freedom he stabbed her to death. This event led Verginius' supporters to attack and overthrow the decemviri thus restoring the Roman Republic.
