I should clarify. My great-nephew was born 11-7-'07. Mom died late November 2007. But she got to hold him... He doesn't remember her but he has her hand guiding him.
I don't remember my great grandmother, but I treasure a photo of her holding me at age 6 months.

Today, April25th in New Zealand and Australia is ANZAC Day, The remembering of the landings of the Gallipoli campaign.

On April 25th 1953, in Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory, researchers Francis Crick and James Watson published a paper in Nature about their discovery of DNA's molecular structure. This discovery was aided by the work of Rosalind Franklin, Newnham College graduate and Kings College London researcher, whose use of X-ray Crystallography was key in revealing the helical nature of DNA.

was born in Cambridge on 11th March 1952.

He used to quip that DNA had been discovered in Cambridge before Watson and Crick. :)

Swallows are back, they perch on my landline cable and swoop around all day chasing insects.
Sometimes coming out of my front porch can be a Hitchcock moment,
they dive straight in. They're a little late this year, but always within the same week,
no matter what the weather.

This (like Ferguson years later) can be viewed in so many ways. My parents were out visiting my sister when this broke out. Rodney King probably deserved but should never have been beaten the way he was and Michael brown should have obeyed the cop instead of assaulting the officer ('Hands up, don't shoot' never happened). Both 'victims were thugs.

I don't know where you live, Marcius, but an imperfect 'sole superpower' covering your ass is better than the next best thing.

Yet Rodney King was beaten the way he was, on tape to boot. Your constitutions and laws are supposed to provide protection to everyone, thugs included, right?

I don't know where you live, Marcius, but an imperfect 'sole superpower' covering your ass is better than the next best thing.
There's covering one's ass and there's sodomizing it. What the sole superpower did to its erstwhile competition is best described as the second, which a) was in the US national interest and b) less than the US could expect had the things turned the other way. However, there's no love lost between the nations, even if one counts our secret services fucking over -- oh, just a little, she could well have lost without any staff emails having WikiLeaked -- one of your 2016 presidential candidates as an act of MAGA. :D

MAY DAY!!! MAY DAY!!! MAY DAY!!!

Any one know what happened to those enormous May Day military parades in Red Square, Moscow? The BBC always showed them on TV for several hours, I always wondered why. Now I'm older and dafter, I imagine it was propaganda to get us in the mood for WW3.

The last May Day military parade in Red Square was held in 1968, although there were sporadic shows by military drill teams later, during the mass demonstrations (which still were being held on 1 May). The yearly 'balls-out' Soviet military parade was held on 7 November until 1990.

There have been Victory Day (i. e. 9 May) parades in 1965, 1975, 1985, 1990 and every year since 1995.

Much better - and older - than all that stuff, it's Beltane (Bealtain),
