Following the murder of Gary Allen Hinman who was a music teacher and PhD student at UCLA on July 27,
I believe the Tate Murders were on 8/8, followed the next day 8/9 by the murders of supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, a dress shop co-owner.
The greater profile of the Tate slayings - along with the fact that she was 8 1/2 months pregnant and married to Roman Polanski, famous director (not yet famous pediphile) made those the ones that are remembered.

The murder of Tate and company may have been a mistake. The Polanskis were renting the house. The previous renter had been Terry Melcher, the sonny of Doris Day. Melcher had met Manson through Dennis Wilson in 1968 and expressed interest in producing Manson's music and making a documentary about the Manson Family. The record and film deal fell through. It is possible the intent was to kill Melcher and his then girlfriend, Candice Bergen. It is also possible that Manson knew that Melcher had moved out but intended the murders to frighten him.
