Cutting (A film) Can Be Painful

MMMV2Sc16_0024_00014621.jpg

Sometimes, when an actress does an excellent job in expressing anguish, fear and pain, the scene goes from Realistic to This Looks Fucking Real To Me. It happened in Olalla, when Amy expressed so much fear in one scene that it was painful to watch. It's happening in Maleficarum Monxa Mala

MMMV2Sc16_0020_00012826.jpg

Jac was in the middle of cutting one scene, where Dani is put on The Rack for some rough mistreatment, and her pleading, crying, screaming was so poignant, that Jac's natural empathy came rushing up to him and he could not watch what he filmed, directed, created. He was so deeply touched, that a scene that has only a few shots, nothing extremely long, and that could be easily edited in a couple of hours or less, took him almost three days to complete.

He had to stop, many times, after going over shots to select the takes to put them together and build the agonizing, heartbreaking scene. After putting a couple of shots together, he would do something else, like watching cat videos in FB. At one point he thought that maybe the scene was too much and it should not be in the film ... at all.

God, that loincloth is so sexy on the girl stretched on the rack!

The Reaction To The Post Cutting (A Film) Can Be Painful

MMMV2Sc16_0015_00020500.jpg

I really didn't expect a lot or reaction to my post about the painful experience of editing a scene in Maleficarum Monxa Mala. I don't get any reaction to most of my posts, so I assume that people read them and move on with their lives. Not in this case.

Our main supporter in this enterprise, Pícaro, was very forthcoming thus:

Pícaro Hello, Margot and EXCELLENT! You posted some terrific shots of Dani on the rack at the Club and GIMP sites. How can you all even think of not including those scenes that so moved Jac? That would be a horrible mistake and betrayal of The Faithful. A terrible betrayal. PLEASE INCLUDE THOSE SCENES!

I began my response to Pícaro with these words: As I said in my posts, Jac was working on that scene and he had a hard time with it, at an emotional level. What happens in the scene is sort of sensitive and a key to what goes on after that, so, I'm forbidden to say what it is. It's a horrific event and it happens right after both, Dani and Simone are whipped, at the same time, at the post. Dani on the cross position and Simone held by her neck. Blood is shed for the first time in the film during the flogging.

MMMV2Sc15_9944_00034101.jpg

Dani's scene on the rack has more of an emotional impact than visual because of what happens and Dani's reaction and acting during her ordeals. Dani looks amazing in it, of course, and the scene is visually striking, but it is the highly emotional experience and the unmentionable event that takes place that carries the scene. Jac felt that maybe it's not what The Faithful is expecting and thus his reticence; however, the scene is in the project's time line and it will stay there.

Pedro Margot wrote about a very severe scene from Maleficarum 2 : At one point he thought that maybe the scene was too much and it should not be in the film ... at all. HAHA Margot!! You're a big teaser tooo!

I've been called a big teaser many times before. My intention was not to tease, but if it works ... who am I to complain? I had a long conversation with Jac, over many things, like the award he got a few days ago, The Culture Award 2019 from CineBol. Big show, longer than the Oscars. We were also discussing his soon to take place trip to Switzerland where he'll give a talk about his work with NatGeo and his more conventional environmental films as well as the TV series he's planning for this year.

We also talked about his now famous trip to Las Vegas where he met someone that he thought it was you (Pedro) ... but now, after much thinking and discussing it with Amy, they recalled that the person in question was from Portugal, not Spain, the conversation with said fellow was in English and maybe there was a big banner of Elite or something similar that stuck in Jac's head and that's why he made the connection, and maybe the banner or poster of Elite was at the next booth and maybe the guy from Portugal's name was Pedro too.

But I digress. In any case, it was then, during that long discussion, that he told me about the scene he was having problems editing because it was so, but so painful to watch that he had to take breaks after going over a few shots to cut them. That's when he said to me, and I quote “Maybe I shouldn't have this scene in the film, maybe it's too much…

I can't deny that I was surprised, because I saw the pictures of the scenes that end the movie and they are really, really strong. Can't show them yet, maybe never because those pictures might be ... SPOILERS!

MMMV2Sc16_0026_00020329.jpg

JD (...) My reaction exactly. I could imagine the burly brute in the cutting room shedding a tear remembering the pain of simulating (badly) a racking sequence that includes Xmas wrapping ropes and a multipurposed kitchen table. So much cringe, so much empathy ... Sorry M, I'll probably buy the movie but can't gloss over its severe deficiencies (for me, other less inquisitive eye might be pleased). As Pedro said, most of the blood when viewing such productions goes into the wood. My blood, for whatever reason tends to stay partially in the prefrontal cortex.

I would not recommend you buy it, JD, not at all. Save your hard earned cash for something that will appeal more to your prefrontal cortex. I'm pretty sure this film is not for you and your highly demanding taste and it would be a pity if you get it just to confirm your feelings. That would be a waste of cash and time, life is too short to spend it on needless unpleasant experiences. Think of the time you would save not writing about it! As much as I appreciate reviews, regardless of how good or terrible they are, they all bring attention to the film. Amy's first film as director, Sirwiñakuy, was trashed by critics in Bolivia and because of it, it stayed on the big screen for SIX months! My kind advise is that you spare yourself the suffering of putting up with another of our movies, really.

BTW, the problem we were having with some people who were trying to purchase our movies had something to do with IPs being blocked for some reason or another. The problem seems to be resolved, we haven't had any rejections in a few days, we were getting two or three per day, not a good thing. But it also means that unwanted IPs can be blocked for whatever reason, like ...

The Second Act
When All Hell Breaks Loose In The Dungeon

MMMV2Sc17_9962_00002429.jpg

Jac is advancing with the montage of the film. Over one hour of Maleficarum Monxa Mala is ready for its final and fine cut. He's in the middle of the centerpiece of the film, the complex Second Act I've mentioned before, where all hell breaks loose in the Mad Monk's dungeon. I referred to the Second Act as The Three Ring Circus.

MMMV2Sc17_9969_00040718.jpg

I believe that in the next four days a lot more will be accomplished in the editing front, particularly between today and Tuesday when a series of sequences will be put together, Martina will suffer the rack, Leticia will suffer more torture, Barbara will suffer The Wheel, Leticia will suffer again, no rest for poor Leticia, Julia will suffer the ladder ... and that's not even close to the end of the second act.

Please excuse my curiosity : is the Monk's character in 'Monxa Mala' played by the same actor who covered the
Inquisitor's role in 'Maleficarum' or otherwise ?
Thanks and best wishes for a great success of forthcoming Monxa Mala!!!

An Update on Camille

NY2002Eulalia071.jpg

Camille will undergo surgery. The details of her condition are private and I can't disclose more than that. I know that she was hoping that it wasn't going to be necessary, but it is unavoidable. We are with her with all our thoughts. Jac will be going to see her soon. We are grateful to the friends who contributed and those who wish to do more. We're in the process of mastering the DVDs we offered and they should be ready this week. We'll be shipping them as soon as they are ready. If anyone wishes to contribute contact me at redfeline@gmail.com. Thank you!

There are some comments in need of response.

jimsac God, that loincloth is so sexy on the girl stretched on the rack! Baracus I agree with you on that.

That loin cloth doesn't last long on sexy Dani, it is removed for further mistreatment of the newly uncovered area of her suffering body. This is the part of the film Jac had a hard time editing. In a movie where cruelty is not in short supply, that scene had, for Jac, an element that was hard to deal with. Oh the contradictions!

MMMV2Sc16_0025_00004413.jpg

Simon Margot: very happy to see your new post again! Oh my goddess, Simone looks so hot in the position, it seems she prepared to get more torture again. Can't waiting to see the hot iron to touch her breast, the scene must be very beautiful! Anyhow, come on to you and Jac, you can make it very very well! Hope I can see the new movie be released soon in the future!

Simone has proven herself to be a great actress and she looks amazing in her role and in that position. I don't know if I would describe the hot iron scene as beautiful, although there's beauty in it; however, I would rather think of it as terrifyingly hot.

SkatingJesus Sounds a very interesting movie. Hope it will be possible to get it in mp4, because reading it in DVD format on my computer is a pain in the ass!

We're considering having mp4 releases of our movies, but it's not that simple. We have four films at Vimeo, in full HD, not many people rent them, as I said before. Most people still prefer to either download the movies or get the DVD. Even the DVDs and VODs at Amazon - http://amzn.to/1MxOTU6 - do better than our films at Vimeo. http://bit.ly/1M7xmpu

I wonder what will happen if we go the VR way with new productions. Amy is an expert in that format now and she's experimenting. It's a matter of time before VR becomes our standard format. Wink Wink.

MMMV2Sc17_9969_00050017.jpg

Baracus I wonder if this charming young lady will still appear....?? Looks so cute in her loincloth.... (Whatever happens,I'm still getting the DVD,as it's pre-ordered....)

Well. The charming young lady Baracus is referring to is Bea and she's not in the film. She received an offer to work on a big production and she decided to take that instead. She was going to be the leading lady, but she was replaced in the leading role in the film by Simone who is great as the new Scream Queen of Red Feline Pictures.

jimsac Divine. ‘Nuff said.

The inquisitor in Maleficarum was Beto. He was going to be part of the new production as the priest that rescues Bea from certain demise at the hands of some enraged women, but because of Bea's leaving the production and other dramatic changes, his role was eliminated, as well as the angry women and all the scenes they were to be in.

End Of The Second Act

MMMV2Sc25_0001_00045323.jpg

This week Jac completed the famous 2nd Act of the movie, where all hell breaks loose and all of the novices are mercilessly tortured... ALL SIX of Them! Some of them simultaneously!

This part of M M M passed the 2 hour mark in screen time. The 1st act ends at almost its proper time, 27 minutes into the film, which is normal for a 90 minutes film. The second act is over an hour of screen time, so far, a lot more than the regular 55 to 60 minutes it should be. There is almost two hours of screen time before the Third and Final Act begins!

MMMV2Sc18_9983_00121414.jpg

The Third Act will most likely last at least another half an hour during the first cut. That's an estimate. The First Cut of the film could reach almost 3 hours!

Ready For The Final Cut

MMMV2Sc30_0011_00120008.jpg

After a highly successful, promising and sentimental tour in the Old Continent, Jac returned home eager and ready for the task of finishing Maleficarum Monxa Mala. The work will take at least two weeks, I expect that I will be announcing the release date of the film by next week.

The past two weeks Jac spent time in Zürich, Strasbourg, Paris and a quaint village called Le Cotroy, where Joan of Arc was held prisoner in the town's castle for a month before being sold to the English and taken, by foot, to the shores of Normandy. The castle was destroyed in 1647. The people of Le Crotoy erected a monument to the young martyr.

A lot of Jac's time in Europe was spent in planes, trains, buses and automobiles. A journey that had Jac share some quality and pretty intense time with me in Zürich, with Carmen (Camille) in Paris, with Veronique in Strasbourg. Carmen jokingly called this journey Jac's Tour of His Women.

The most emotional meeting was the one in Paris, with Carmen. They hadn't seen each other since her short visit to La Paz back in 2006 or so, and because of her recent health problems, Jac was very tense and extremely worried. The encounter brought some relief to him and it was incredibly pleasant, they had a good time walking the streets of Paris, sharing moments with some great French wine, baquettes and cheese. Jac learned a lot more about Carmen's condition, which is serious but treatable and now he awaits for more news from her, if I'm not mistaken, Carmen is having surgery this week.

CamilleJacParis032019.jpg

Simon Dear Margot: long time no see in this weekend, it looks like the schedule a little bit delay, will the new movie Maleficarum Monxa Mala be released on time at the end of March? Just a little worry, thank you!

Jac will begin the Final Cut of the film this week, after getting his act together. He had some urgent Accounting and Management work to do as well as get updated in what needs to be done in the home and work fronts. He's getting into the proper frame of mind now. I should have some good news about how the final part of the film is going by the end of the week.

Jac had some inspirational moments during those long train and bus rides and he's thinking of shooting a film similar to Mila À La Croix with one of the members of the Maleficarum Monxa Mala cast. He has a great title for this new quick movie, which, if it happens, I'll reveal it. He's having discussions with the potential damsel in extreme peril this week.

We were very thrilled and excited that Amy was inducted to the GIMP Hall of Fame, deservingly so, and I have a lot to say about that and about Amy. I'll do it in my next post. Amy visited the GIMP recently and left a nice message which I repeat here:

Hi All, Thank you so much for the lovely, amazing comments! I am so honored to be added to the GIMP Hall of Fame! And just before the anticipated sequel to Maleficarum is released…

The photo I included is me with Dyanne Thorne and Howard Maurer, of “Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS” fame, taken at a film festival in 2013. Who knew that, six years later, she and I would be joining the Hall of Fame on the very same day?!

I am so grateful to this forum, Ralphus, and the amazing people who make this forum what it is. And I am happy that I could be of service to the forum when it was in web crisis. May the GIMP go on for many years to come!

Well done Amy.... !!

The Last Stretch For Maleficarum Monxa Mala

MMMV2Sc29_0055_00094604.jpg

Jac is in the last stretch for this film. This past week was extremely busy. Two weeks out of the HQ has consequences. The short, relaxing, emotional journey left us with lots of work to do upon our return home. We had to take care of many big and little details, like accounting, and unresolved issues, some dealing with legal and business matters. However, Jac dedicated a lot of time to the editing process, the final cut, and he's advancing well. At least 50 minutes of the film went through their final cut, 2 hours of screen time still ahead to be cut down a bit.

Jac plans to finish cutting down those final two hours during the coming week. If he manages to do the job the way it has to be done, perfectly, all that will be left to do is the sound mix and color correction, both of which take a day or two. Then comes the processing of the clips in their different formats and the uploading to our stores. If all goes according to plan, we'll be releasing the film in two weeks. I don't think we'll be able to do it before that. I expect we'll have a teaser, or trailer very soon.

Meanwhile, we're also busy with our websites, revamping vermeerworks.com because we'll have the theatrical release of Pygmalion in July, and we need to have the site nicely set up. There's a lot of work coming our way in that part of our production work and we must be prepared. Jac will be having talks with Dani and Simone for the possibility of making a couple of 'solo' movies with them, in the style of The Passion of Isabel, where one character will suffer extreme and multiple torture.

Dani already expressed her willingness to be put through a lot more than she had been put through so far. Simone was very happy with the work in Monxa Mala, so, she too might be willing. We'll release Maleficarum Monxa Mala before we get involved in any new productions of course, but Jac is planning the work for the rest of April and May. In June and July we'll be busy with a documentary and the theatrical release of Pygmalion. From August to the end of the year there are some plans already, two feature films, at least and the possible trip to France in November, something exciting will be happening there.

Part of Jac's emotional journey to Europe had to do with Carmen, aka Camille, who underwent surgery the very same day Jac was arriving in Bolivia. All went well. She did not communicate with Jac until today, they had a great chat and he learned, to his relief, that Carmen is doing great, that she's returning to her artistic activities, that what she faced was scary and that she's not yet completely out of the hook, she'll know better in a month, but it looks promising. And she surprised Jac with her willingness to be part of a film we're planning to shoot in the US. Veronique confirmed it too, so, if Jac gets the funds and completes the script, as demanded by Amy, he'll be working on an extremely dark production with Carmen, Veronique and... AMY!
