The trial of Deb Morton and Cindy Chao was held in a courtroom at the Bronx Supreme Court jammed with media and assorted onlookers. Thanks to the notoriety of the case, the defendants, despite their relative lack of resources, were able to obtain good pro bono counsel (though why Cher’s late husband was involved is unclear) who felt that the publicity would be useful in building their reputations.

Given that their DNA was found at the scene and toll records showed Deb’s car entering the Holland Tunnel from New Jersey to Manhattan on the evening of Amanda Berger’s death and returning to New Jersey later that night, along with Cathy Townes’ testimony, they couldn’t easily argue that they were not present.

Instead, the defense attorneys argued that Amanda had chosen to mount the chair, insert her head in the noose and kick the chair away-that, despite the presence of the defendants, at the end of the day, it was a suicide. Against this, Sam Bittner, ably assisted by the lovely Susanna Rodriguez, had Cathy’s testimony that heavy coercion was applied.

In addition, they had the video of Barb’s hanging in the barn. The defense objected vigorously to this being admitted, arguing that the crimes were separate and unrelated. The judge, a no-nonsense man nearing 70 years of age, ruled it admissible because the crimes were part of a pattern of putative criminality on the part of the defendants.

However, before allowing the prosecution to show it, he cautioned everyone, “This is a courtroom, not a strip club. Anyone who feels compelled to comment on this video will be ejected. Now, I am aware that still photographs from this video have been leaked to the press. There is nothing I can do about that. But let me warn everybody that should even a second of the video get outside of this courtroom, the responsible party will be held in Contempt of Court and sent to enjoy the delights of a cell at Rikers Island. Do I make myself clear?”

With that, Susanna Rodriguez rolled a large screen TV in front of the jury box. The twelve jurors sat open-mouthed, watching the video, listening to the defendants cajoling and pressuring the naked Barb into climbing onto the stool and jumping to what would have been her death had Stan not intervened.

Finally, the defendants’ lawyers argued that they had been brainwashed by Kevin Wilson. They called several of the other women who were FutureVision members to testify that they lived only to follow Kevin’s orders and serve his desires in their quest to reach their full potential. They pointed out that Kevin Wilson was currently fighting extradition from Brazil, sought by the Feds on charges of sex trafficking and money laundering. They presented evidence unearthed by the FBI that he and Linda Gregory had been selling videos of Amanda Berger’s hanging and that of the other victim in New Jersey to “discerning viewers” on the dark web, though those had been taken down when they fled the country. The FBI was actively working to obtain copies of those videos, but had not yet done so by the time of trial.

In his closing arguments, Sam demolished this excuse. “The defendants are adult women. They have not been kept chained in cages. They live on their own-one in another state. Assuming even that Kevin Wilson suggested that they engage in this criminal enterprise, a fact which the defense has completely failed to prove, they are autonomous actors. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you saw the video of Detective Moore’s hanging and you heard Ms. Townes’ testimony-they enjoyed watching Amanda Berger hang, as they enjoyed watching Detective Moore hang. They got a sexual thrill; they had the best orgasms of their lives.”

The jury took only a day to deliberate. Interestingly, they asked that the video of Barb’s naked hanging be replayed several times for them in the jury room. Given that it was key evidence, the judge allowed it.

In the end, they found Deb and Cindy guilty. Later, at sentencing, the judge found that their behavior was depraved and disgusting and that membership in a cult in no way excused it. He sentenced them to life in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women, the maximum-security women’s prison located just north of New York City. This facility has been home to many famous prisoners over the years, including Amy Fisher, the “Long Island Lolita”, who, at the age of 16, shot the wife of the man she was having an affair with, Joey Buttafuoco; Jean Harris, who murdered her ex-lover, Dr. Herman Tarnower, inventor of the Scarsdale Diet; and Pamela Smart, a high-school teacher who seduced a couple of her students and convinced them to kill her husband (the case was the subject of a very good movie, To Die For, as well as an episode of Law and Order).

There was an interesting moment at the trial, when Detective Barbara Moore was asked on the witness stand how she came upon the “HangingFantasies” web site. “I did a Google search,” she testified.

“Do you recall which search terms you used?” Susanna Rodriguez asked her.

“Not exactly,” Barb replied. “Hanging, erotic, thrill, something like that.”

At their apartment that evening, Stan watched Barb clear away the dinner dishes. “You know very well you didn’t find ‘HangingFantasies’ from a Google search. It was on Amanda’s phone, and you had no right to copy her data,” he told her.

She turned to glare at him. “Are you telling me that in the history of the NYPD no one ever told a little white lie to help convict someone they knew damn well was guilty?”

“Perhaps. But, still, perjury is a crime that must be punished, don’t you think, Detective Moore?”

Barb sighed and shook her head and muttered, "Damn you, Goldman", but, still, she began undressing, before bending over the kitchen table.

Because of the trial and their book deal, Barb and Stan didn’t use those tickets to Rio right away. Kevin and Linda remained in a posh villa in Copacabana, very near the beach, that belonged to an offshore shell corporation. With Linda’s money, they hired a team of expensive lawyers, both Brazilian and American to fight extradition. Ironically, they used the fact that the jury in the Bronx had found that Deb Morton and Cindy Chao were not brainwashed, but were responsible for their actions, as a defense against the charges that FutureVision was anything other than a voluntary self-help group. Linda’s connection, through her late father’s oil company, to highly-placed government officials didn’t hurt either.

Then, one day, a young woman, accompanied by an older gentleman, both wearing sunglasses, left a posh hotel in Copacabana. Nothing unusual in that-what man with a younger lover who, together, had scored a major book deal, wouldn’t take his paramour to Rio? But instead of turning towards the beach to stroll among the bronzed bodies for which Rio is justly famous, they turned down a quiet side street and approached a gate in a high wall that enclosed a lush tropical garden, fragrant with bougainvillea, the house inside barely visible from the street.

Madiosi-2018-356-39EpilogBrasil2.jpg

There was a small polished brass plaque next to the gate. The woman pressed the button in the center of the plaque, while the man hung back in the bushes. Did anyone answer? Were they invited inside? If so, what did they find? All of that is the subject, perhaps, of another tale for another day.

You prick...

So Cathy Townes got off scot free? That does not seem quite right, she was guilty too and enjoyed watching Barb hang, making no attempt to stop the others. Surely some custodial sentence is in order, even if much less than life in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women. She at least deserved a good spanking from Barb.
Incidentally there are not that many hills in Bedford UK as I should know having lived there for a good many years. In the south of the county yes, the Chilterns, but not in town. (Apart from Manton Lane where the Texas Instruments factory used to be. The local brewery gets its water from a spring at the foot of Cemetary Hill, thus ensuring that there is plenty of "body" in the ale.)

When there are multiple guilty parties, the one who rats the others out often wins the lottery. Unfair? certainly, but who said life is fair. As for spanking from Barb, nowT HAT would be yet another story, and a very "interesting"one at that. Stan might want to join in too..:p:firedevil:

Wait!It's over!?The end?
Everything has to end sometime...:(

I'm relative sure, we can read in the future other stories from this genious writer team (and probably Madiosi-Manips seeing also).

I mean……the story doesn't seem to be over yet,I thought other bad guys would kidnap our lady, forcing her to finish what she should do……Because in general, there must be a fish out of the net.
So we can see “The Hero Saves a Beauty” again.

Or Kevin Wilson and Linda Gregory vow revenge on Stan and Barb.
Using the money Linda has access to and "sleeper cells" of Kevin's in the USA, also hit squads of Kevin's zombies from Brazil, the plan proceeds.
As Cathy leaves the luxury apartment purchased by Stan and Barb, overlooking Central Park (sorry only NY park I know of) after midnight, following her weekly spanking (part of the deal, though not so described in the Court papers) she is seized by the assassins.
She is gagged, bound and dragged into the park where she is crucified with ropes and nails to a tree in the most remote location therein. They intend that her death should be slow. To prevent her talking, should she still be alive when found, her tongue and vocal cords are disabled (somehow?).
In the event she is dead by next morning as the temperature dropped sharply overnight accompanied by heavy snow.
When found as the snow melts a week later she is perfectly preserved as are the DNA traces of Barb and Stan both on and in her body.
"Bang to rights" for Barb and Stan - long terms in jail. Barb is sent to renew her aquaintance with Deb and Cindy, should be fun, fun fun.
Maybe KW and LG will engineer a prison riot and in the confusion the perps will crucify Barb?
Does this float anyone's boat?

I think so far the content is the Part Ⅰ,it shouldn't end like this,I want to see the Part Ⅱ.:tiburon:

Or perhaps Kevin Wilson starts a career in musical comedy, Linda Gregory changes her name to Jenny Talia.

Move over Tree, the Aussie lowers the tone around here
I guess we should have googled the name before picking that one. As for lowering the tone, I don't think that's possible:eek:

Stop reading ahead;) I do like the idea of a weekly spanking, as long as it isn't done too weakly. The judge will probably want to be present to insure that proper procedures are followed.

We were seeing this as Part II already, with The Bronx Crux Murders as Part I.

Speaking only for myself, I have been sort of feeling that I have more or less said everything I have to say on the topics that animate this board. But with all the kind words, maybe Barb and I can come up with something (and Madi can dream up some new illustrations). But I hope you guys won't mind if we take at least a bit of a break:)
