Christmas when I was a kid
In Scotland, Christmas wasn't even a public holiday until 1958 - Hogmanay (New Year) was.
And meat was rationed throughout the UK until 1954.
So I think it was a bit dour for my grandparents.
Probably a lot more so across Continental Europe ...

Possibly by today`s standards , but that did not prevent us from thoroughly enjoying it. Personally, I spent Christmas 1954 in the Army in the Canal Zone in Egypt, but things at home started to improve in the 50s after being pretty Spartan during the 40s, when we had to make the most of whatever we had.

Those pictures I just posted are of a married woman, age 26 I think, and her lover who were caught fooling around and were tied naked in public for 2 days and a night. The pictures are blurred because they are all from various news services. This took place in Rajasthan, India. One of the news articles says the pictures went viral on whatsapp but I don't know how to access them.

Eulalia's new boyfriend serenading her outside her flat.
'ya bassa', Glaswegian for 'you bastard', is said by many on the internet to be
a Gaelic war-cry,'"aigh bas" meaning "battle and die"' It isn't and it doesn't,
they might be thinking of 'fhaigh bàs!' (imperative, the fh and gh are pretty well silent),
that means simply 'die!'

The piping's not bad, shame about the drumming.
