Other Forms Of Execution

Thus died Francois Ravaillac for the murder of Henry lV of France after nearly a day during which one of the horses had to be replaced when it became exhausted.

Further to this, on 28th March 1757 Robert Francoise Damiens was executed by the same method for the attempted regicide of Louis XV. There was one exception to the method employed previously in that he had his right hand burnt off before having his limbs torn off by the horses. It is recorded that he took two hours to die and then only after all his limbs had been torn from him. When he heard the sentence passed on him Damiens is alleged to have said, "It's going to be a rough day."

He was the last to be executed by this method in France and the crowd booed the executioners. At the next regicide the crowd cheered them. How things change.
