Teller of Tales
The following is a story about slavery, real slavery. We wanted to present it from various perspectives-that of a slave, slave owners, overseers and law enforcement that serves the interests of the owners.

All chapters labelled Barb were written by Barbaria, all those labelled otherwise are by yours truly. We plan to post one chapter per day, circumstances permitting.

We begin with the Prologue below:

Prologue

This story takes place approximately a century from now. Industrial civilization was destroyed by a nuclear war brought on by human greed and stupidity. In a few days, most of the world lay in smoldering ruins. 98 % of mankind was obliterated. The remnants were reduced to a life without modern technology, living as people did in the 17th century. In various places, powerful warlords arose, who seized most of the available land, doling some out to their trusted lieutenants.

Over the following century, this social structure solidified. The top strata of major and minor landowners, along with some merchants in the towns that remained, controlled everything. Without machines, their large plantations required hands to work. Thus, slavery was re-instituted. Unlike, slavery in the early days, this was not racially or ethnically based, but economically based.

Those who didn’t own large tracts of land, or work for the landowners or the government they controlled had to scratch a living as they could from small farms. Since atmospheric CO2 was still elevated from the effects of 200 years of fossil fuel burning, the climate was unstable, so crop failures were frequent. While large landowners maintained reserves and could easily manage bad times, the small farmers were forced into debt.

Needing labor to run their large plantations, the landowners would lend money to small farmers with the proviso that default would give them the right to recoup their money by demanding that the authorities seize family members, a wife, a son, a daughter to be sold as slaves. Once made a slave, they would remain so for life and their offspring in their turn would be slaves down the generations.

Barbara Moore was born to a small landowner, David Moore and his wife, Patricia. They were poor, but managed to survive for many years. Finally, though, when Barbara was 18, they could no longer hold on. The lenders seized their land and took them as slaves, selling David to one landowner and auctioning Barb and Pat together with several others who had fallen into similar circumstances.

This is Barb’s story.
