Yeah, I looked it up.

Group flings are the in thing for mammals from monkeys to livestock. Woolly spider monkey males line up peaceably to take their turns with females who are in heat. Domesticated female cattle display their readiness to mate by mounting each other, which signals the bulls to come running. Female cats in heat, including African and Asian lions, will copulate with multiple partners up to several hundred times in one day. It is pretty tough to imagine that these reproductively unnecessary levels of contact are nothing but an odious chore.

There is a new paper on this in Nature Ecology and Evolution (I have not read it but have read of it) that says that the first sexual organisms couldn't tell the sexes apart (and there are hermaphrodites, and some penguins at least still can't) so mating behavior was not sex-specific. It also questions whether mating is so expensive energetically that there would be an evolutionary drive to eliminate this type of behavior genetically, noting that a whole lot of heterosexual mating produces no offspring at all. (Some females can store and discard sperm, and there is evidence that sperm from various males vie to fertilize eggs with adaptations like swimming speed. Even if there is only a single male involved, a huge amount of sperm is produced compared to what is used.) Sex is a complicated business, and I think a lot of people would prefer to opt out of all the complications if they could.

COMPLICATED? Maybe. But I would never give up, believe me!

Understandable. But there is the comment from a 17th-century Lord Chesterfield to his son: "The pleasure is momentary, the position ridiculous, and the expense damnable." There is also the line from the Altman film "McCabe and Mrs. Miller": "Money and pain. Pain."
I still contend that there are complications.
