Meanwhile, those Vikings who emigrated to Yorkshire, England found life a little less comfortable:

(Reconstructed Viking village, York)
(apologies if you've seen this one before)

Scarborough, AD 800.
A Viking longship sweeps into the Bay,
and within minutes it reaches the beach,
out leaps the Jarl waving his sword, he yells the command,
"Burn!"
and his men race up the beach to set the town ablaze.

Minutes later, a second longship arrives,
glides majestically up to the sand,
out leaps the Jarl waving his sword, he yells the command,
"Pillage!"
and his men hurtle up the shingle, eager for loot.

Half an hour later, a third longship limps into the Bay,
struggles slowly and painfully through the waves,
and eventually grinds ashore,
out leaps the Jarl waving his sword ...
"Oh no!" groan the clapped-out crew,
"Not bloody rape again!"

if I am not mistaken a great picture of Hadrian's Wall
Yes, heading over Hotbank Crags towards Housesteads, mist rising off Crag Lough.

Thank you for the detailed information Eulalia :)

I found myself this evening surfing for paintings and sculptures inspired by Gustave Flaubert's
erotic orientalist fantasy Salammbô - a work more or less forgotten at least in the English-speaking world,
but it was enormously popular in English as well as French in the 'decadent' end of the 19th century,
Oscar Wilde acknowledged it as the model for his Salome. It's about a mystic veil being stolen from
the temple in Carthage by the city's enemies, Hamilcar's daughter Salammbô
has the quest to recover it, though it turns out to bring an evil fate on all who touch it -
there are crucifixions (male), Salammbô dies in horror as her lover is tortured to death...

But the scene that most aroused the artists was the one where she undresses
and allows herself to be embraced by a sacred python, whose coils fill her body
with the courage she needs for her quest -

Ladies, if this spoils the vibe I do beg your pardon. But when I think of nudes and snakes the first image that springs unbidden to mind are these unfortunate fellows.
