This is an early 737. The first time I flew on one was back when Southwest Airlines was based at Love Field in Dallas. Love Field had been Dallas' main airport (JFK's body was flown from there to Washington, DC after he was assassinated) before DFW opened. The airport had been stripped of major airlines' boarding gates but the carpeted walls help the dark shadows of where logos of TWA, American Airlines, etc. once graced the gates.

Airlines flying out of Love could only fly to other Texas cities and states that bordered Texas. The 737s were basically shortened 707s with half the engines. The engines, as you can see, are mounted directly to wings. As a smoker I sat in the back of the plane (oh, the joys of those days) and when we landed at Houston Hobby field I was amazed to see massive clams open on the back of the jet engines!

By the way 737s are now almost as big as the 707 was when it retired and both Dallas Love and Houston Hobby are now pretty finely dressed-up places...
