Interesting element : he hardly thinks back about his crimes, but somehow he feels his own agony on the cross as a kind of 'justice' for his responsability in the death of Athenais.

I like your analysis. He knows that he is “officially” being crucified for dumb crimes that he committed with dumb people, but deep down he feels like it’s karma (or a Hellenic/Roman version of the concept) for leading a nihilistic, purposeless life. He gave up on finding a meaning in life after Athenais, and that led him to drift around, doing a show here and a crime there, until luck ran out.

But maybe, through one of his most senseless crimes, done for no reason at all, he leaves behind a legacy that might amount to more than he ever did.
