Same here. But it wasn’t until I took a college English course in SF many years later that I learned that Kubrick worked from the American edition. The original British version had a final chapter wherein Alex, well, grew up (he was only 15 in the book). He started to feel that ultraviolence was a waste of time, and decided to become a composer.

Oh my. I’ve heard of that clip, but have never seen it. It was trimmed from the American cut of Clockwork Orange that I saw. To get it an R rating rather than an X. Back in 1971 the latter rating hadn’t yet been co-opted by the porn industry.
