I think that's more or less what Jac Avila has been trying to do with Red Feline (both with crucifixion and inquisition torture). He's supposedly shown some of his films at festivals in South America. The problem, from what I read in the GIMP anyway, seems to be that as he gets more "artsy" the core audience doesn't like the stuff. 12 Years a Slave was quite non-erotic for me, despite Ms Nyongo being incredibly beautiful.
Yes - I think Avila takes a very artistic approach, so you could say it is “non-porn” in that way, but I also think there’s no disguising that his films are meant to be highly erotic. Not that that’s a bad thing, but the “erotic film” market has a whole different dynamic than the “historical drama” market. (And I agree entirely about 12 Years)
