Stress Positions

They say that stress can be harmful to your health. But that's only partly true. I say stress can be very beneficial as long as you're the one viewing it or inflicting it on someone else.

Case in point: Stress positions.

Stress positions can be very simple. Standing still can be very taxing, leading over many hours to edema, kidney failure, delusions, even death. Assuming a sitting position with back braced against a wall can become painful after just a few minutes.

Forcing someone to stand with arms raised becomes very uncomfortable in a short period of time.

How long can you stand like this?

Or like this:

Perhaps your interrogator orders you to bend over and place your hands flat on the floor. No problem. You didn't take those Yoga classes at the gym for nothing.

During questioning, still unsatisfied with your answers, he has had you spread your ankles progressively farther and farther apart. yoga pose8.jpeg

The interrogator is giving you a crash course in "Hot" Yoga.

Yoga inspires many an interrogator. Here, a woman in the "Downward Dog" is trying to explain exactly what she was doing at the anti-government protest, and who she was with. We need names, please.

A classic stress punishment is Murga ( a Hindi word, meaning "rooster.") It was used primarily in India and Pakistan as school punishments and by the police in those countries to punish minor crimes. The arms are looped behind the knees, and the earlobes are grasped with the thumb and forefinger. There are variations: standing Murga, sitting Murga, walking Murga, and I would add sexing Murga.

Here a teacher is in standing murga after school hours for not caning the students vigorously enough

And here a young woman is placed in murga by her husband for not having the correct volume setting on the football game he was going to watch.

Please feel free to post your own favorite stress positions.

In line with your premise, this would make a good stress position, stay like that for 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 . . . . under the pretext of a medical examination.

add a little involuntary bondage, and kneeling with arms suspended over the head could get uncomfortable pretty quickly

Forced to run, and crouch, for long periods with hands behind head?

More stress positions repurposed from the world of Yoga. I'm sure even an adept practitioner would find these positions quite demanding if forced to assume them for long periods of time. I know from my own experience that sitting in seiza, the Japanese sitting meditation, or in the Lotus, can become quite uncomfortable after a relatively short interval.

Imagine these women in some sweltering, filthy prison cell, bound in these positions, and forced to endure them for hours.

Frequently the stress position is enforced with restraints.

Here, a Western woman has offended the social order in a small, backward country. Unable to stand in murga for five minutes, she has been stripped naked and will stand like this, in full public view, for five hours.

During the Edo period, the Japanese used a systematic progression of four tortures to elicit confessions. The third and fourth levels involved stress positions. The third was the ebi (prawn) position.

A few other ebis:

If the ebi didn't produce results, the fourth level would be applied; hanging from wrists and ankles:

Terrific pics (I've never seen before)! Thanks, Phlebas! I particularly love the first three. I don't know, it's something about the eye glasses on the young lady. I imagine a studious and hardworking young college student, a sociology/psychology major, who is curious about this whole "Fifty Shades Of Grey" phenomenon. She trusts the wrong assistant professor and finds herself in way over her head.

The fifth pic, I see, is from "Subspaceland. " I joined that site many years ago. It's run by a joker named "Marcellino," who, I suspect, has an ego the size of the great outdoors. He has an unfortunate penchant for deep kissing his models, and apparently believes that viewers join mainly in order to appreciate his artistic genius. He uses a lot of arty camera techniques: turning the camera sideways, zooming in and out, lots of flash and fade effects, filters, etc. etc. His models are typically very attractive, and not infected to an American degree with the mania for tattoos and piercings. As you can tell, I was very aggravated with the site. So near and yet so far.

I'm glad you liked them.

Here are some more. This one counts as stressed, a very awkward way to have your lunch!

Full suspension strappado is not a stress position, but a full blown means of torture. And a subset of torture porn.

All very well for traditional and CGI artwork, but a tad problematic for actual people. Natalie Portman's body double in Goya’s Ghost had the musculature a professional acrobat, but I can only hope the lady in that last pic weighed, like 90 lb (~40k).
