Well, they won't like that very much, will they? I mean, they almost had her crucified, which would have saved a lot on the personnel budget. They might be able to replace her with two young female slaves sessional lecturers at less cost.

I don't even know where she is anymore.:oops: Is there a signpost? Maybe she's on a desert island after that shipwreck.:doh:
Young female sessional lecturers are hard to find and even harder to keep...

PART 21 : AD 2073

The University.

“A few weeks ago, a black shadow was cast over our countries. Opponents of peace, stability and prosperity believed that they could see the day approaching on which they could overthrow all our achievements of the last fifteen years, only for their own profit! Unfortunately, several of our highest and most esteemed institutions had also been infected by that dark shadow. That included this university! I come to tell you, Ladies and Gentlemen, and that is why I gathered you, and why I came personally here, that the University, as the other institutions, had nothing to do with that threatening shadow. It carries no blame for those subversive elements that had infiltrated its ranks and who had taken abuse of their social position to undermine our society! The closure of the University was not a sanction, but a preemptive measure to stop the spreading of subversion!
Today, I come to express my trust in the leaders and staff of this university, and I want to show our enemies that the Governments and its institutions stand as solid as this block I am standing up here!
Holding fast to the virtues of hard work, order and discipline, that once made this continent great, will not only make our will to succeed our plans indestructible, it will also mean that the resurrection of our countries will continue to have an effect far into the future. What has to come about in the next fifteen years shall live for centuries!
Filled with the spirit of loyalty, devotion and discipline, despite the sacrifices in the past, and yet to come, I trust this University will help making the way to the future...”

There he stood! Del Nero himself, speaking at the reopening of the University, after the closure due to the coup. Del Nero was speaking from the tribune of the Parade Ground, the place where promotion ceremonies were usually held. Del Nero, who was now also Chancellor-general. He combined the positions of prime minister and head of the state. Nothing to do with power or dictatorship, oh no! That was a subversive allegation! Just a matter of efficient government, of course!

Julia stood on the Parade Ground, facing the tribune. She and four other staff members. Professors from the law, engineering, medicine and one, a female colleague, from the science faculty. Each of them was flanked by two bedels, dressed in their ceremonial uniform and carrying their long stick over their shoulder. There was much ceremonial uniform that day. The Rector, the Deans, the lecturers were wearing their traditional academic dress, with ribbon, gown and cap. Del Nero wore an army-like uniform, apparently introduced recently for his combined function. It made him look even more sinister than he already was, especially with his dark sun glasses. Students wore a uniform-like dress, also a novelty. And Julia and her four companions wore academic dress too. Besides, there must have been hundreds of invitees around the Parade Ground.

‘…. by offering its brains and talents and means available to this great project! I trust I am giving this project into the most capable, the most loyal and the most devoted hands of our countries!”

‘Blahblahblah’ Julia thought. She hoped it would be over soon. The ‘invitation’ was surely not intended to welcome her back in the ranks of the University.

“While we will be working towards our goals, we shall not tolerate that anyone would dare to oppose us or put resistance! Only lunatics or deliberate liars will still deny the achievements and progress we have made during the last fifteen years! Opposition, Ladies and Gentlemen, is treason! Treason to peace! Treason to the people!"

Julia hoped I would be over soon. Standing up for almost an hour, under the sun, was a terrible effort for her. The weeks in the stadium had left their traces. The undernourishment, the maltreatment, the terror, had undermined her physical strength. By moments, her knees trembled, all her body trembled. She felt terribly tired and she wanted to sleep. The sun made her thirsty. By moments, her stomach turned, making her feel sick. By moments, she felt dizzy, as if she would pass out. She had a headache, and the pains from hanging to the parrot perch came back in her knees, her back and her neck. Even standing motionless, she was sweating profusely. She constantly tried to carry her body weight from one leg to the other. She was tormented by itching all the time, everywhere over her body. But when she wanted to rub over it, one of the bedels ordered her :
“Stand still! Give attention!”

Finally, the speech of the Chairman-general was over. The crowd enthusiastically applauded. Then, the Rector magnificus took place on the speaker’s platform.

“Mister Chairman-general, Delegates from the Governments and other authorities, Deans, Members of the university staff, Ladies and gentlemen!”

He paused a second, looking around as if he wanted to ensure himself everybody was listening.

“This… is a historic moment!”

Again, he paused and looked around, as if he wanted to make the alleged heaviness of his words fall on all the audience.

“Mister Chairman-general, on behalf of our entire university, I thank you for putting confidence in our institution in helping this great project come true. I can assure you that we will not betray your trust, and that I will personally see to its success!
Today, on the occasion of the reopening of our university, I call up everybody to face together the direction of the future, in the way it will be guided by the Chairman-general!
Today is a historic moment, because we are definitely turning a page! We are leaving behind an old culture of tolerance towards subversion, a culture that has allowed dark shadows to undermine the strength of this university, as it undermined the strength of our society! From now on, the University will loyally take on its duties and responsibilities towards society, towards the quest for peace, prosperity and stability! The University will no more tolerate any kind of the old, subversive so-called liberties, which once have pulled our continent into years of trouble!”
As a symbol of the turning of this page, as a marker of the start of our new culture, of our effort to contribute to the building at the future society, we shall now publically eradicate five elements from our institution, which have abused their position, their authority, their prestige of being a staff member at the University. They had the deliberate intention to spoil our institution and our society with their subversive and destructive ideas. Five criminals, conspirators against peace, who, thanks to the efficient working of the Chairman-general’s security forces, could be identified and removed from our university. They are as from today dishonorably dismissed from our institution and deprived from their rights to execute a public function for life!
We have chosen to dismiss these evil spirits publically, in order to show our determination to turn our faces to the future. In front of you, on the Parade Ground, stand five former members of our staff. Look at them, Ladies and Gentlemen! They are the dark shadows! This ceremony is a purification. It is also a warning to keep in mind by all! “

While he said so, he pointed his digit at Julia and her four companions.

“The Dean of the faculty, these conspirators against peace once belonged to, will now carry out the ceremony of dishonorable dismissal"!

Julia took a deep breath, as the Rector had made clear why she was brought here. She started trembling.

“From the Faculty of Arts and History Julia Bersel! Dean Radwin! Proceed!”

“YES! SIR!” It sounded quite enthusiastic. Clearly the Dean felt more than just sense of duty!

Escorted by another bedel, the Dean stepped towards Julia. They held a firm, military pace and attitude, as if they were on an army flag parade. The Dean’s face looked stern, but Julia noticed he could hardly suppress a grin from ear to ear.

Julia would have to be strong now! Several hundreds of pairs of eyes were aiming at her! A wave of sickness seized her, and she hoped she would keep her composure.

The Dean halted in front of her.

“Julia Bersel! In the name of the University, I strip you from your symbols and dignity as a lecturer at our institution. You are dishonorably dismissed! “

Julia stared motionless forward, as the Dean took of her cap and threw it on the ground. The bedel handed him a pair of scissors and he cut the buttons from her gown, after which he and the bedel took it from her shoulders and dropped it on the ground too. Then, the Dean took off Julia’s ribbon and tore it apart, while he whispered to her :
“You are lucky we are a civilized society, you sick, wicked woman! If it had depended on me, I had let you stripped naked in front of all the audience here!”

Emotionless, Julia replied :
“One day, it will be you standing here!”

The Dean and the bedel marched back, leaving Julia standing, her academic dress ripped and discarded in front of her feet. Julia suddenly felt cold, without the gown, while she was sweating at the same time. She felt as if she was naked anyway, standing naked on the Parade Ground, beheld by hundreds of hostile and vengeful onlookers.

“From the Faculty of Law….”

She hoped this would now really be finished soon.

“One day, it will be you standing here!” she repeated to herself.

Great writing Lox!

Dean Radwin!

Alright, you. You think you can hide behind switching a few letters around. You will hear from my attorneys, Dewey, Cheatham and Howe. All three of them. :p

If it had depended on me, I had let you stripped naked in front of all the audience here!”

Come on, that is for my office only!:D:devil: In fact, maybe if Julia had been a little more "accommodating" I might have helped her out of her jam. Too late now...

About my sources of inspiration. I have put a few 'cultural references' in my last episode. Del Nero's speech is inspired by one Adolf Hitler gave at the Nuremberg rally in 1934, to 'explain' to the SA the Röhm-coup two months earlier.

A line in the speech from the rector is borrowed from John Cleese.

I don't even know where she is anymore.:oops: Is there a signpost? Maybe she's on a desert island after that shipwreck.
Jolly, the shipwreck was in 2051, some 20 years earlier as the main setting (2071-2073). It was flashback.

She hoped this would now really be finished soon.

“One day, it will be you standing here!” she repeated to herself.
Good thing she's in a civilized society.:eek:
I wonder if Julia will get to see them stripped of their honours and titles. It seems doubtful, somehow.
I wonder what happened to Martha the lawyer.
Edge of the seat stuff, Loxuru!

A similar phrase speak Sophie Scholl in the Movie "Sophie Scholl - The last Days" in the court Volksgerichthof to the Judge Roland Freisler.

As soon as I read these lines I had a crucifixion scene in mind. Removing academic regalia? Too easy. Really good story Loxuru, with plenty of unanswered threads to keep us guessing.

I know of course the story of Sophie Scholl, but I have not seen the movie. The phrase is pure coincidence (for once, Julia recalls the principles of 'tactful response to people who are in control of you';)).

The next chapter will travel back in time again....
