A 2015 drawing by hurch@, which went a long way to dispelling my misgivings about Anime as a suitable style for crux art. For instance, the quivering motion and jagged pain lines that are common cartoon art devices are used with excellent effect here.

She has been properly scourged before being mounted on the cross. The Romans would use whips containing bits of broken ceramic or sharp stones, even metal so that each blow would tear into the flesh. It was not the pretty little whipping we sometimes see in art work, with little red stripes here and there.

It is interesting the way they bind the feet. It appears that there is a piece of the rope under the feet in some cases so that the woman can stand on it to some extent and push herself up. In others it looks like the feet go down into a rope nest. The toes go down into it and then the rope bites into the wider part of the foot when it reaches that point. There would be some pain for the model in pushing herself up since the rough rope lies right over the top of each foot taking all the weight of the body.
Re pain, some from the pressure of her weight perhaps, but not from rope abrasion. The first thing I noticed about Makar's crux technique was his use of soft ropes.
