The Passion (2008, BBC Mini Series) Crucifixion scene

Go to CruxDreams.com
The BBC miniseries, The Passion, which aired back in 2008, followed the story of Jesus from his time in Jerusalem, to his crucifixion, and then his resurrection. The thing I found interesting about it was the way Jesus and the thieves (or Dismas, and Gestmas as they've also been referred to as) are crucified. The crucifixion takes place in episode 3 of 4 (episode 4 also shows the aftermath with all three dead on their crosses). Jesus and the thieves arm crucified high up on their crosses, they're nailed in their arms with their hands raised higher then their heads (Jesus' arms are raised higher), Jesus and Guests' feet are nailed together sideways with their legs bent and sticking out to the side while Dismas' feet are nailed separately with his legs spread open, and their sitting on sedile. I think it's just a different and also unique way we've seen crucifixion in films and tv shows. Let me know what you think.

The excellent Joe Mawle as Jesus. :)

I think they based the scene on current scholarly opinion as to the way crucifixion was done.
Whether the soldiers would have had to keep those hot, heavy helmets on is the only thing I'd query.

I really like this crucifixion scene, I used to be able to find the video on YouTube but not anymore. I like how the thieve look like regular man that I can relate to, Jesus looks super buff tho. I like the part of him being nailed and especially as the soldiers raise him up on the cross.

I actually found the full miniseries free to watch online. There is a downside however, the entire thing is dubbed in Russian, but still you get to see the crucifixion scene, and for me that's all that matters.
Anyways the series is divided into two videos on the website, the first one being episodes 1-2 and the second one is episodes 3-4.
the crucifixion scene is on 3-4 and starts at 0:46:53 in the video, which is basically half way into the video

Hey thank you so much, found it, they have other Jesus movies there. Do you know any links to other crucifixion movies or plays, I especially like the nailing part.

I suspect the soldiers would not have done more than supervise and guard the executions!!!

Yes, I remember the discussion about this "Passion" series here and at the "male-crux-only" brother-group at yahoo over there. In the mainstream media there were also some articles centering around this "new" crucifixion style with the spikes through the arms and not through hands or wrists. Until now I do not really understand what about this style shall be more "realistic" than nailing throgh the wrists.
But I think it was, all in all, a pretty good crucifixion scene. The actor playing Jesus was unknown to me, he seems a bit "rough" for the christ figure, but he had a good body to be displayed on the cross, not as weak or thin like Robert Powell in the 1979 Jesus of Nazareth series but also not as hunky as Christian Bale in "Mary, mother of Jesus", more like somewhere in the middle between these.
I did like the idea that after the initial screaming when the first nail is driven he falls into "shock" and the camera stays on top of the cross when its raised and finally falls into the hole on the ground torturing the victim once again with the impact. Thats really well done.
The "thieves" were not that convincing for me, the "bad" one does show no real feeling of pain, the "good" one is better in the aspect. The crosses are simple, the knees bent and the bodies somehow distorted in their hanging so you think, "ugh, that must really hurt hanging in this way".

In the discussion about the sequence I became aware for how many crux-fans the factor of the victim getting displayed in fromt of a huge crowd seems to be very important, because one of the the main critics was that even when the barren and desolate landscape did add a lot of atmosphere there was no crowd and spectators at "Golgotha" beside Jesus family and the soldiers - an aspect to be continued in the recent "Killing Jesus" movie with a simlar location but no crowd.
I think the filmmakers did it this way to pronounce, that Jesus´execution was more a routine matter so no big crowd assembled to watch it, because crucifixions were conducted every day and this one wasnt different.
But for crucifixion as a S/M fetish the fantasy of hanging (naked if possible) in front of lots of spectators getting aroused by the display seems to be very important, so this was a slight disappointment here, same with "Killing Jesus".
For me personally this factor is not so important, I am more focused on the victims, their look and body and the crucifixion style, so I was satisfied with this stuff.

best regards
Ty.

Safety first, Eul! Imagine a nail dropping on their head! Or a badly attached titulus falls from the patibulum!
Of course, Regulationes Sanitatis Salutisque must be observed!
