cf in the Wiki page, château d'Ecouen (north of Ile-de-France).They certainly look like, and sound like, military barracks with military discipline
My godmother, who was from Franche-Comté, spent many years in this 'château' (more or less : 'castle'). The school is no longer there and the castle is nowadays a visited museum, cf. the 2nd article

And : yes, there was a strict discipline but it was not a military school strictly speaking
Authentic : the colored belt which identified the pupils of a class, publicly withdrawn in case of grave fault (the shame !!)
But it's not the main theme of the story
