Great Pics Found By Phlebas And Other

Is she a POW or a deserter, or a traitor? From which side?
No need to find out. There are no good or bad guys in this conflict. There is just cruelty.
The guys in the back are more concerned about an ambush or a booby trap. They probably will let her hang, as they continue their scouting mission.

Great pic, Phlebas!

None of the above, just a poor innocent caught in the winds of war.

Unfortunately, the leader of the patrol has another opinion.
"Now listen, men! In this conflict, there is not such a thing as innocence! Innocence is guilt! Innocence is desertion! Anyone claiming to be innocent, admits to dodge his or her duties to help your side win this war! Carry on!"

Oh shit!

At the risk of changing the subject slightly, I have a new artistic discovery...

I think many of us will be familiar with the resin sculpture, 'No al Feminicidio', by Guatamalan artist Manolo Gallardo which he produced in reaction to the murders of and violence against women just a few years ago. Whilst I was aware of this large figure (see illustrations) and the negative response it provoked, I was not aware of his other work until recently. 'No al Feminicidio' was considered a parody of a devotional crucifix, and Gallardo defended the figure by denying this and suspending her on a hoop instead of a cross. Nevertheless, she had to be removed from display outside the Centro Cultural Miguel Angel Asturias.

I recommend a look at Gallardo's website manologallardo.com for viewing another resin bas relief entitled 'Crucificadas'. This time Gallardo leaves us in no doubt that the three girls depicted are indeed crucified. He indicates that the work is inspired by the murders of two girls and their mother and aunt in January 2013. The groundwork is punctuated by human bones and skulls whilst three butterflies, one beside each girl, symbolise the Mirabel sisters who were assassinated in 1960 after opposing the dictator of the Dominican Republic.

'Crucificadas' is a powerful and beautiful visual statement, but as Gallardo has indicated the ages of the crucified girls to be 7, 14 and 21, I shall leave posting of the image to the discretion of the site supervisors in this case (and I apologise if the image is already on the site!)

Gallardo's website contains other work in bas relief and I submit one here to provide a flavour. There are also large numbers of beautiful paintings of girls and women, many portrayed as fairies or other fantasy subjects. The work of this very talented draughtsman and painter has only just come to my attention, and I cannot resist sharing some of my favourites over three posts. I hope you like them too.

By way of a footnote, in 2013 alongside the bas relief 'Crucificadas', Manolo Gallardo intended to exhibit more than 200 photographs which he had collected of crucified women, "in different artistic expressions, encompassing the very spiritual, very sensual, very sublime and very vulgar." I don't know if the exhibition went ahead as he planned, but he certainly interpreted the material in a wonderful way. Might this explain why some of his crucified fairies resemble Katrina from 'Crucified Women'?

Wonderful, Bob.

He did some actual Crucifixions too, some naked, I don't know if they were spiritually inspired or not. I'll post on the male crux thread.
And he did a painting of himself with a painted version of the large female piece, and a photo of himself in front of the painting. Very meta, very recursive.

And some sad pics of the sculpture covered up :(

Thanks Phlebas, I hadn't seen those before. #2 is very transcendental and the statue is gaining living colour - it must be a reference to the Pygmalion effect. He's a passionate artist and his love for the subject comes through his work. As a Pre-Raphaelite fan, I feel obliged to submit Edward Burne-Jones' take on the subject by way of explanation.

Maybe I won't. A pretty and alreary broken girl is quite valuable, in these hostile, dangerous lands. As an officer commanding a Century, I've got to think about the welfare of my men...
