Burned at the stake

They don't? Have you heard the one where the people of Fortingall will tell you that Pontius Pilot was born there?

Love the Scots, love Scotland (been there 5 times) but I trust their version of the facts about as much as I trust the Communist Chinese or the Irish.

Well you guys have now got ‘alternative facts’. Hard to know how to argue against those

Damn near fell off my chair when I heard the Fortingall one. And it was from a Scot with a real love of history. By the end of the evening he agreed that the historical timeline made it impossible but it took a couple of hours for him to concede and he isn't even from that part of Scotland.

Well yes. We English have to put up with the stories of how centuries of Scots butchering each other is somehow always definitely the fault of some English guy

Still, the yew tree at Fortingall was already old when Ponty was around - which is probably more than can be said for Joseph of Arimethea's thorn-tree at Glastonbury.

You know I love when someone claims this (and Poem I don't mean you).

Has anyone EVER ASKED someone who actually died of freezing to death? And how would the deceased be able to compare it to for example the pain from dying by hanging? You only die once (that we remember) you know.

When someone actually interviews those who have died from various methods and develops a way to measure what is more or less painful please let me know.

Until then anything else is speculation.

I think it probably is possible for medical researchers to arrive at some reasonable estimate of the degree of pain likely to be associated with different ways of dying, though of course it's very difficult to compare one person's experience of pain with another's even when they're suffering the same trauma. Of course, the moment of death is itself necessarily the end of any pain.

One of the Nazis' contributions to scientific knowledge was tying up naked prisoners on beds and leaving them outside through freezing cold nights to study the medical effects.

Delightful!

They did a lot of these type of experiments, leaving the ethical dilemma of whether the results of such experiments should be used by those who came after them.

Not naked, but an interesting series

anyway with these BATS things all the preparations and everything leading up to it can be very 'hot'
(and a great excuse for some costume play, see above ;)
but once the flames rise and skin cracks and peels away and melting body fat runs down etc.
for me the erotic flames get snuffed out quite abruptly and I tune out.

Well I don't know if I would agree with "probable" as all of our current methods rely on monitoring the electronic impulses thru the nervous system and our interpretation of how the brain works (an organ we really don't understand). I would agree that they can draw some conclusions based on our current knowledge. But conclusions are not facts.

Your point about pain being relative is extremely important. I find pain erotically stimulating, I have a sister-in-law who if she has a headache is convinced she is dying.

Of course, the moment of death is itself necessarily the end of any pain.

Well that is just a guess, one which most of the major religions religions that exist (or have existed) would disagree on. The concept is called Hell in English and it is pretty universal.

One of the Nazis' contributions to scientific knowledge was tying up naked prisoners on beds and leaving them outside through freezing cold nights to study the medical effects.

The Nazi's faced even more limitations on the subject than we do because their medical technology was less advanced.

One of the problems in all of this is we look at a "result" and even if we know the "cause" (freezing to death) we guess about a good deal of what is going on. In order for it to be scientific knowledge it has to be measurable and reproducible. And even if we can measure things (like a reduction in brain activity) what is going inside the brain (feelings, delusions, etc) is merely a guess on our part.

All through out history some of the latest "scientific" knowledge has had a really bad habit of becoming tomorrow's scientific nonsense (You can't create a heavier than air flight machine, you can't exceed the speed of sound, set off an atomic bomb and you'll start an uncontrolled chain reaction that will destroy the world, just to name a very few recent ones).

But the arguments are great fun until they become fact.
