Almost any music by JS Bch is uplifting. This piece with the modern double entendre meaning, "Air on the G String," always brings a smile to dirty-minded CF folk. And played by the fetching Korean, Yoon Kyung Cho, just adds to the pleasure.

Thank you Eulalia, Opera North are not afraid to get out and about, and the Trinity Shopping Centre love hosting pop up events.

The very strange silvery-looking object seen in the first seconds is a laden pack horse, representing the cloth trade where home-based weavers brought their week's output to Leeds to be sold:

Behind it is the spire of Holy Trinity Church, after which the centre was named, and the roof so shaped that it can be seen.

Rudyard Kipling is often dismissed the days as an imperialist and racist. It won't argue his worth now. However, in 1890, he published a poem set in British-ruled India, call Gunga Din, which went on to become one of the most popular poems of the nineteenth century. Told from the point of view of a common, lower-class British soldier with all the racial prejudice and stereotypes of the day, you will see it ends with an expression of respect for a member of the "inferior" race that is up with Robert Burns' "A Man's a Man for A' That".

When I started this thread, I warned that religious faith had a role in my struggle in difficult times. Here is a passage that uplifts me in a time where people are fond of pointing fingers at the moral or social justice shortcomings of their fellows.

T. S. Eliot, gave the topic some thought back in 1939, in his The Idea of a Christian Society:

It ought not to be necessary for me to insist that the final aims of the churchman, and the aims of the secular reformer, are very different. So far as the aims of the latter are for true social justice, they ought to be comprehended in those of the former. But one reason why the lot of the secular reformer or revolutionist seems to me to be the easier is this: that for the most part he conceives of the evils of the world as something external to himself. They are thought of either as completely impersonal, so that there is nothing to alter but machinery; or if there is evil incarnate, it is always incarnate in the other people — a class, a race, the politicians, the bankers, the armament makers, and so forth — never in oneself. There are individual exceptions: but so far as a man sees the need for converting himself as well as the World, he is approximating to the religious point of view. But for most people, to be able to simplify issues so as to see only the definite external enemy, is extremely exhilarating, and brings about the bright eye and the springy step that go so well with the political uniform. This is an exhilaration that the Christian must deny himself. It comes from an artificial stimulant bound to have bad aftereffects. It causes pride, either individual or collective, and pride brings its own doom. I don't think bikinis ever work in Punta Arenas, no matter what month it is. They do have penguins there, though, I think.

"So I'll meet 'im later on in the place where 'e 'as gone" is one of my favorite lines. It evokes going down with all your flags flying. ("Oonts", by contrast, I like because it illustrates "Situation Normal All Fucked Up".) Pessimists can be pleasantly surprised--optimists are always disappointed.
And yes, Kipling was a supreme racist, but at least he gave people their due. (Lincoln was a racist, too, but he believed in fair play.)
