Spectators gather around and point and laugh, the prisoner in intense agony struggles on his beams, each up and down movement intensifies the pain of the nails. Wealthy patrons are welcome close to the cross, they may feel over and inspect the prisoner, teasingly tugging the loincloth. The bidding begins and the lucky winner is given possession of this tattered cloth, the condemned one now completely naked and exposed. This sadist spectator is invited to participate in the torture. First he stuffs the soiled loincloth into the prisoner's mouth, further restricts the breathing. Then perhaps a sedile screwed onto the stipe, near the ass. Anything to prolong the death and suffering.

Maybe slightly off topic but an interesting scene. Rebels and protesters were often taken in by the militia, severely tortured for information gathering purposes. The 2nd picture is of the interrogation room. I was told prisoners most often never left there and several officers would be in there, each taking their turns with the electrodes. I was told this was early 70's Chile, not sure if true and the 2nd picture not verified for accuracy.
Of course if I had my druthers, they should have put this fine lad on a cross after the electro torture, execute him in public. But of course this was done in secret.
