Yes, and it appears to be becoming more and more hopeless with each passing day.

I haven't lost hope yet, Barb. American history is filled with extreme party loyalties. Just think about the Know-Nothings, and how they killed people going to the polls. We got through that.

Somehow, we always seem to survive. I think what saves us is the very thing we're trying to save: our freedoms, especially speech.

You and I are exercising that at this very moment!

Even though I have a bit more grim prospect about the matter, I can at least agree that we have that last part covered here. For, where else on the internet can you freely talk about the attraction of torturing naked women and can hope to get away without getting burned at the stake? :p

Have a cup of coffee and a cookie and make friends with everyone!

I think it is good advice from Eul to keep this place friendly, but I would suggest to fallenmystic that even here you cannot hope to get away with anything without being burned at the stake. In fact, it is entirely possible that whatever you do here, you might get burned at the stake. It's one of the things we do, after all. That said, if we do burn you at the stake, it will be in a friendly CF manner, and will hopefully be described or portrayed in imagery in an interesting manner. Carry on, regardless. :D

Oh, I know what you're thinking! Unfortunately, there seems to be one small problem for your secret plan to work as intended, which is the fact that I'm not female.

If I were a girl, you could strip me naked and burn me at the stake, which would certainly get noticed by women outside the community - just to make sure that one of our female members to be the one who starts the fire.

It's not difficult to imagine how they would get mad at such a barbarous abuse of a helpless female, so they will all join CF to burn whoever that committed the deed - who happens to be a girl, as we arranged it that way. Now do you see a pattern here?

If they - who are also all women - burn that female member at the stake, it will draw the anger of yet another group of women outside the community so they will join us to burn those uncivilized and cruel women. And we can do this ad nauseum, until our we triple and quadraple the number of female members of our community.

But alas, I'm not a girl and I doubt there would be many who would even care if a naked middle aged man gets burned or not. So I suppose we need another volunteer who happens to be a female among us to make your secret plan to work :D

"who would even care if a naked middle aged man gets burned or not"

Hey! Firewood gets better with age!

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
― Issac Asimov

Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it” is attributed to the American philosopher George Santayana The explanation is there in plain sight . Why do some fail to see what is real , I don't get it ... do you , all of you ? There are no perfect solutions and sometimes progress is slow . Without progress where would we be ?

“Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent “.. Asimov is very quotable :) I’ve thought a lot of his concept of a “Seldon Crisis” recently, when two or three crises arrive simultaneously, and civilisations either adapt or die

I think, more and more, Americans are becoming apolitical. We are caught up in our everyday lives, which in the US includes an inordinate amount of labor (Americans are hard-working to a fault). When we have leisure time, we prefer to spend it on mindless things (video games, crucifixion websites, etc.).

And we have a false sense that things will just keep going as they're going. Americans have experienced little change in their mostly comfortable lifestyles since the Civil War. All conflicts since then were "over there." There were sacrifices, to be sure, but we still went to the bowling alleys, the parks, the restaurants, our jobs. We didn't have to deal with destruction and impending catastrophe on a national basis (as did, say, the British in WWII). And so today, why should we bother with an election? The feeling among many Americans is, I'm too busy to care, and nothing will change radically for ME anyway, no matter who is elected.

As sad proof, look at the usual turnout in national elections:

Even though we have a little more fluidity in our political makeup (a recent coalition, a hung parliament, a landslide victory) voter turnout is little better in UK. So it can't only be your 2-party system.

Agreed. I think it's our so-called "independent" lifestyle. I mean, in some ways, that's good. It helped build a mighty country from the 18th-20th c. But lately, we need to come together more. And that's not happening. I suppose it's not happening in other countries as well. Sometimes I think we need a world-wide revolution. Hopefully not a bloody one.

One of my old professors once said to us students: "You will see things happening like no generations saw before because all human problems will probably grow like in an exponential curve and no one seems to be prepared for that or willing to work on them until the problems 'are flying around your ears'. (German saying: "Die Sachen werden euch um die Ohren fliegen!")
At the same time, you will witness the "synchronicity" of "asynchroneous events in human society", for example people will live in a mental or in a socially state of the Middle Ages at the same time when science will make its greatest progress but many people will cling to their personal beliefs or "atavistic political or pseudo-religious beliefs" because they do not want to understand the need of scientific research and results. It will be interesting how mankind will solve all these problems but I am sometimes happy that I do not have to live through these modern times, because I am soon an emerited professor."
I am afraid, my old pessimistic professor who died 10 years ago, was absolutely right.

In principle, we all could have known of all our coming problems long before.
It was a typical human failure not wanting to perceive the results of an exponentially growing population on earth with billions of new engines and motors in cars, ships, airplanes, factories, heatings, etc. and all these items are burning something.
Only 150 years ago, the only engines and motors were steam engines in locomotives, and there was not one billion of human beings on Earth, I think, and today?

Believing that all these developments will have no impact on the temperatures on Earth was a nice illusion.

I do not know how the temperatures are in the USA right now, but Europe had during the last 18 years 6 of the hottest summers ever and in last year's summer, Paris had for the first time ever in the center of the city - next to the Eiffel Tower - at noon in the shadow (!) a temperature of 42 degrees Celsius = 107 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 consecutive days.
In the future and even after coronavirus-times, you will not like such temperatures being a tourist in Paris, believe me.

This summer in Germany is not so hot, but it is almost too warm again and very dry, so dry that we are worrying about our big forests. Other countries are already having more problems than Germany, which is lucky again to have usually wind from West and from the North Sea. Portugal, Spain and France are remarking changes in their landscapes - an almost desertification in some areas - and all our countries are reporting problems with diseases which are transmitted via insects we did not know before because they died in the cold winters we knew in our childhood.
For the first time, the so-called "Asian Tiger Mosquito" or the "Sand Mosquito" survived in the warmest regions of Germany (Heidelberg, Freiburg) and we suddenly have confirmed cases like the "West Nile Fever" and other "tropical" illnesses we only heard before from Africa or Italy's Sicily.

Too much of such "nature" will become dangerous very soon.

And unfortunatley, some studies are telling us, we in Europe or we in the Northern hemisphere of our globe are the most responsible for this, because we use the most energy and we produce the most carbon dioxide by our standard of living. We need to find some solutions and this "better yesterday than tomorrow".
