Dear local office of the political party for which I vote, just to (unsuccessfully) stop the other lot getting in,

I am really not a grammar nazi, but, seriously, the plural of party is NOT party's...............

Yours grumpily,
Migoz2

Using it is not the problem, but those who rape it!:roto2palm:

"You language rapist!" was a favourite expression from our teacher in our mother language, when one of us in class (even girls) made a heavy grammar mistake!:nono:

"You have been found guilty of careless endangerment of the English language, through the brutal and thoughtless rape of an apostrophe. You will now be taken out and shot."

Ok. Perhaps I am a grammar nazi.....

I will always open up for a man who uses proper grammar. So sexy!

(Spelling counts too!)

Abuse of the colon is a particularly nasty form of grammatical rape :p

Queen Elizabeth II of Scotland?
Hoo can there be a second Liz when the first yin's never bin?
She's Queen Elizabeth I of Scots. But in a bulletin for Nigeria, I'd have put
'Di Queen make am Knight ... for Holyrood Palace in Scotland.'
I'm sure if they'd just said 'Di Queen', that would have sufficed -
Nigeria is in the Commonwealth, of which the Queen is still the head,
I'm sure speakers of Nigerian Pidgin would be in no doubt which Queen they were referring to.

That's fightin' talk to someone north of the border!

James VI and I tried to replace 'Scotland' and 'England' with 'North Britain' and 'South Britain' for his two kingdoms, and those terms were sometimes used in royal proclamations and official documents in his reign and Charles I's, but never really caught on. After the Union of Parliaments in 1707, 'North Britain' was used by some of the pro-union figures of the Scottish Enlightenment (and most of them were strongly so), in the 19th century I think some Scottish regiments were at first called 'North British', and the main railway from London to Edinburgh was run by the North British Rail Co. Although that way of referring to the country never replaced 'Scotland', the idea of nationhood really only caught light again in the economically troubled times of the 1970s, and the Thatcher-ruled 1980s.

This cheered me up:

Here he is, speaking to us across all these centuries:

Another in my occasional series devoted to women who lived fascinating lives....

La Belle Otero (born Agustina del Carmen Otero Iglesias in Spain, 1868) was a famous singer, dancer, and.....courtesan. When still in her young teens, a cafe owner paid her to dance for his customers, though her boyfriend Paco kept all the money. She had no formal training, but she was well received as a singer her first night on stage. By age 21, she was traveling and performing in shows all across Europe, as well as in New York. Newspapers spoke of her great beauty, of how her dark eyes melted one's heart, and her sexual escapades.

She collected lovers (and their money) everywhere she went. She had affairs with several powerful and wealthy men who happily gave her whatever she wanted. One of them spent his entire fortune on her, then blew his brains out. There were rumors of other men killing themselves over her, so she became known as the "Suicide Siren." Two men fought a duel over her. Once while performing onstage, the jealous mistress of a man she had been with stood and fired a gun at her.

During the first World War, she devoted herself to charitable causes. Once the war ended, she decided she was too old to go back to her previous life, so she retired. By this time, she had amassed a fortune that would be worth about $25 million (US) today. However, she gambled virtually all of it away in the casinos of Monte Carlo. She died in 1965, living in a one room apartment in Nice, France.

Fortunately, she lived long enough to see a movie made about her. The last pic shows her in 1954 with Maria Felix, the actress who played in the movie.
