Imprisonment and Execution in Modern Singapore Part III of Barb's Singapore Saga

Go to CruxDreams.com
Wow … wow. I read this not once, not twice but three times! A thrice-fold reading was necessary to appreciate the nuances of this ingenious execution method. I wondered, when the girls were first sentenced death by impalement AND hanging, how the devil it would work. But PrPr, that is genius!

I remained convinced up until a short while ago that at least Amanda and Barb would be reprieved, then I thought it might just be Barb, but now … I think the infernal impalement has gone too far for there to be anything left of these poor girls that is worth saving!

And did the heart monitor at the end imply death had already become them?

I know there is a little more to follow and so I shall save the expression of my gratitude for this wonderfully, brilliant epic until it is truly over. But, wow PrPr what a treat this has been!

Fourteen months ago, this very day, I began a modest tale of Crime and Punishment in Modern Singapore, starring the inimitable Barbara A. Moore on vacation in that beautiful city.1245789-sing.jpg
If I'd had any idea of the size and scope of the eventual project, I doubt I would have undertaken it. But here we are 427 days later with the conclusion.

Seratus Enam Puluh Enam (166)

Execution Chamber, 12:12 PM
The audience’s attention was laser-focused on the final agonized death throes of the three sexy women, impaled and hung, when, suddenly, the side door to the chamber burst open with a crash. A tall man in a Parliamentary Guards uniform ran in, waving an envelope and heading straight for the Commandant. Musa jumped onto the stage and handed Bin Osman the envelope. “From the President,” he gasped. Bin Ibrahim looked up at the three girls on the poles. Their faces were deep purple, and blood was running freely down the polished, shining rods. He saw no sign of life.

As unflappable as always, Commandant Bin Osman took the offered missal as if this form of delivery was the most ordinary thing in the world. He broke the seal and removed the single sheet. Mamat quickly read the writing. Then he turned toward the executioner. “Ravi. Halt the machine.” Govindasamy instantly flipped a switch to halt all progress.
Mamat looked at the note again to be sure and then swiftly gave his orders, “Ravi, Please release the nooses and withdraw the impaling rods. Bring the wheels down; Guards, remove the prisoners from the wheels; Dr. Liú, please do what you can for the prisoners.”
Ravi reluctantly but promptly obeyed his orders and switched the servos to unwind the noose ropes and to retract the rods into the floor. Then the ratchets began lowering the wheels toward the stage. Imran and Lim jumped to obey Mamat’s orders, directing their men to release the bodies.
The Commandant turned to face the audience. With a face revealing not the least emotion, he deadpanned, “Well, Ladies and gentlemen, we have an unexpected change to today’s program.”

Execution Chamber, 12:18 PM
As Frost huffed and puffed his way into the chamber against the tide of departing, disappointed guests, the guards were removing the last prisoner, Josephine, from her wheel and laying her body on a gurney.
Seeing the three bodies, motionless on the slabs, Jack knew they had been too late. “Musa!” he cried out in agony, collapsing to his knees and sobbing between gasps for air.
“It’s OK, old friend,” said Musa, coming over to comfort him. “We were in time. It looks like all three may survive.”
“[Pant] Thank God for that,” breathed Frost in relief. He bent over, trying to catch his breath.

Dr. Li hurried from gurney to gurney, taking vitals and giving injections with her Epinephrine pens. Once her triage was complete, she had her orderlies rush each woman to the Infirmary.
As Frost regained his breath, he went over to where Musa and the Commandant were standing. “So the President did pardon them, after all?” he asked.
“No, Jack,” said Musa. “She couldn’t do that.”
“The President commuted the sentences,” said Mamat, with a touch of disappointment in his voice. “She reduced them to the next most severe, Fifteen years at hard labor.”
“God!” whistled Frost. “But at least they live.”
“If you can call it that,” sighed Musa. “They will serve their time in a jungle labor camp on Borneo, run by the Malaysian government. It’s named Selamat Beramal, 'Happy Work'. Singapore pays to house prisoners there.”
“That does sound pretty bad,” conceded Frost.
“Bad,” laughed the Commandant. “It’s a living hell. The inmates, especially the women, are worked mercilessly in the jungle heat, beaten and raped repeatedly. Between the climate, the disease, and the brutality, many prisoners survive less than two years. Those might be the lucky ones.”

“If you ask me, my friend,” said Musa in a sad voice. “They might have been better off dying here today.”
“But there is hope,” objected Frost. “While they breathe, there is hope. Perhaps we can get their sentences reduced?”
“I like your optimism, Frost,” chuckled Musa. “You know, if you want to get them out, it will help a lot if you are working for the Guards in an official capacity.”
“I think this is all a devious plan on your part to keep me on.”

Musa touched the side of his nose, a gesture he’d learned from Jack. “Perhaps, Luv.”

Monday, April 15, 2019, Singapore Evening News
We have breaking news tonight. A major Cabinet shakeup has followed from the Barbara Moore / Amanda Jones scandal of last week. As our viewers should undoubtedly recall, the two women were sentenced to death by Hanging/Impalement for murder and drug-dealing, respectively. At the very last minute, just before completing the sentence, a reprieve was issued by the President’s office, commuting the sentences to fifteen years at hard labor. Also, rumors flew that a third woman, highly-placed in the government, was to be executed simultaneously and was also re-sentenced to hard labor.
Here is a clip of the President’s spokesperson, Rayyan bin Haziq, giving a partial explanation on Saturday morning:

“First, the President does not wish to imply that these women are innocent. That is not a matter for the President to decide – only the courts can do that. They both committed the most severe crimes while our guests in Singapore. However, only yesterday did it come to the President’s attention that a highly placed person had interfered to influence and pervert the course of justice in these cases to conceal her own wrongdoings. Given those facts, the President decided it was only fair to reduce the sentences from the ultimate penalty to a lesser, yet still very harsh punishment. Any additional leniency must come from the courts.”
“The actions of the person interfering with justice have been investigated by the Parliamentary Guards and a representative of the police Special Cases Unit. This investigation resulted in a prompt resolution and conviction of the guilt party. The criminal was sentenced to die beside these women at noon yesterday. Due to the intertwined cases, the President determined that the same mercy would be shown in her case.”

Well, today, the other shoe dropped, as we learned that the Minister of Home Affairs (the position responsible, among other things, to ensure the fair administration of justice in the Republic), Josephine Shanmugam, had resigned from the Cabinet last Thursday. That is all we know for sure at this time. Some sources indicated that she was the party referred to in the statement from the President. We will report to you immediately as more information becomes available.

:hello:

Stay tuned for the sequel: Barb, Amanda and Jo do hard time in the jungles of Borneo.

Will they bond in common desperate cause against the prison camps rapacious guards, against their victimization by the camp’s warring inmate gangs, against the appalling conditions of heat, exhaustion and relentless hard work? And what about insects, snakes, etc? Will they plot escape? Will Jeffrey, out of guilt, plot to bring together a mercenary force of misfits and adventurers (such as thehangingtree, Fossy, Settantuno, Twonines, Old slave, Montycrusto, Heineudo, and Wragg, etc.), to affect a rescue? Will PrPr have the will, stamina and guts to launch a sequel after finally completing the present epic? Will the various Hollywood studios fight legal battles over rights to the screenplay?

Who knows?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

It’s just not fair!

I`m sure we would all be up for it, but there`s no way the idiot Jeffrey would be in charge!!

When Musa and Frost finally arrive,
Barb and Amanda are barely alive.
They still face a living hell,
So all`s not well that ends well.
For Frost the victory seems hollow,
Is there a sequel to follow?
At least, things could be much worse,
Now you`ll be spared all this crap verse.

Crap verse??? Nonsense. It’s been an eagerly awaited addendum to each day’s episode through the ordeal. Applause, applause, applause! :clapping::clapping::clapping:

It`s Prpr who deserves all the plaudits, this has been a massive undertaking involving a huge cast of characters, all of which he has succeeded in making interesting ,even the despicable ones.
We know that your role in CF fiction is usually to be flogged and sexually used(not always in that order),but he has reached new heights(depths) in the treatment he has given you in these sagas, erotic brutality in the extreme, culminating in that horrific near death experience.
Although the poetic licence he used to place his story in Singapore was very unkind to a City State which is clean, efficient and democratic and from which we could learn a great deal, it provides a fine backdrop to the story, and corruption can exist anywhere although rarely to this level.
The standard of the writing, and the research behind it, is something of which PrPr can be justifiably proud.
The doggerel that I produced was inspired by that, and if I needed a muse, then who better than Barbara Moore?

Bravo 99, what brilliance you have shared with us as a wonderful complement to PrPr's epic tale! Thank you my friend.

Well, it's done ... and glory be, they escaped at least with their lives, but to what alternative fate ... more to be told for sure!

First of all a huge thank you to PrPr for keeping us all so lavishly entertained. What a story, twists and turns, and anecdotal loose ends to be picked up in due course ... and yes if PrPr wants to ever build a 'team' to explore the jungles of deepest borneo I'm sure many of us would don our Indiana Jones Hats, pick up our whips and join him ...
Thank you so very much PrPr ... take a bow my friend!

I know there are some threads that have been left hanging. But life doesn’t always tie up everything at the same time
What will happen with Kathy and Jeffrey and Scot?
Will Frost go to work for the Guards?
What will happen to the three women in Borneo?
What about Trixie’s difficulty in Turkey?
Will the Commandant and his cronies get some new women to ‘play’ with besides his sex slaves Charlotte and Chunhua?

I know some few readers, deeply disturbed by months of lockdown, might wish to read more. But for the author’s now fragile mental health, a break from the island Republic is a necessity. As far as a Turkish adventure goes, nothing is currently planned – though it is a tempting scenario.

So, farewell to Singapore, though not, perhaps forever. I feel like Barbara did. After planning a short stay there, I got trapped in intrigue and adventure. I, at least, can write the end of my story.

I've been thinking for a little while that a relaxing, stress-free vacation in Scotland might be just what I need. Wandering among the quiet forests and the peaceful fields of purple heather and reciting Bobby Burns would be balm for my soul
But even in that idyllic land,
“The best-laid schemes o’ mice an ‘men
Gang aft agley”

Who knows? Maybe another adventure awaits in the Northern Forest.

I've come a bit late to the party, and it might not have been a good idea to read the last two chapters first without knowledge of the backstory.

That being said, the desciption of the method and process of the execution is breathtaking. Combining impalement and hanging is a great idea. Furthermore, I liked the ambigeous ending rather than a happy-end.

Seems like I have the pleasure to start the story from the beginning as soon as I find the time.

Better late than never.

Here is a listing of all my archived stories. The first of the Trilogy was Crime and Punishment. The Second was A Capital Punishment Trial. Of course, if you like the banter, you can go to the original threads. Just search Singapore
