Nailvember Day 8: Let Me Help
@malins (feel free to consider this a birthday present)
Thanks, this is one of my favorite elements in a crux fantasy.
The dungeon is quite dark though and it's hard to make out the nail being passed between them (or the rather wicked looking hammer...)
... so I've tried to brighten it up a bit (maybe it's just my screen settings)
I'm guessing this is how the procedure went ... a bit unconventionally since there are no ropes to help...
... I think it would be hard for me to just get on the cross, with no ropes, and hold myself up there with no fixation. I'd probably slip off, especially
when he starts nailing my right wrist. Try as I might there is no way I'll remain perfectly still.
So -- first he told me to stand upright on the floor on the right side beside the cross, and he ordered me to place my right hand above my head, against the beam.
Then he passed me the nail, ordered me to kiss the nail-head, and return it to him.
Then he pounded it in.
With that done, he helped me get up on the cross that's resting diagonally against that stone slab. (That hurt a lot)
With one wrist fixed and one foot on the footrest there's enough to hold me in place.
Then he hands me the spike for the feet, same procedure - kiss it as a a sign of my acceptance of my fate, and pass it back.
He pounds it through my feet, right over left.
And then the kiss-and-pass-back is repeated for the last nail, that goes through my left wrist. And then it's done, I'm nailed to my cross.
There doesn't seem to be any kind of socket or hole in the ground for that cross to be lowered into,
so the next step is probably attaching chains or ropes to it and pulling it up to a vertical position and holding it there by those chains.
Since this is happening in a dungeon it's perfectly plausible that there might be some kind of winch mechanism for suspending it from the ceiling.
And then... I'm up ... and the suffering truly begins...
