Probably my earliest crush, Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on the TV program, "Gilligan's Island" is dead at 81 of COVID. In her later years, she became an advocate for rescued elephants.

As one of five kids, I never saw 'Gilligan's island' when it was a 'new' show but I watched it on weekday afternoon reruns religiously a few years later!!!

I've never seen Gilligan's Island. Apparently it was only ever screened once in the UK, back in 1965 - the year I was born - and was dropped after 13 episodes due to poor ratings

Gerry Marsden (1942-2021), lead singer of the former Merseybeat band 'Gerry and the Pacemakers'.
Most famous hit : 'Ferry Cross the Mersey'.

There's something about recordings from that era - that seems so 'amateurish' in many ways - that get me by the throat.
That's certainly a lovely tribute to Liverpool's river, but another of his hits became the anthem:

I didn't know You'll never Walk Alone" was one of theirs.

I have to confess, I lived in Britain for 20 years and never visited Liverpool  I never crossed the Mersey, though I feel it would have come off second best to the ferries of my native city :D

Does it get very choppy in the Mersey?

The song is from Carousel, a Rogers and Hammerstein stage play.

Ha, try a New Zealand ferry ride!

Indeed, I should have made that clear. But in Liverpool - and indeed in Britain generally - that version by Gerry Marsden has become the standard, there's no other way anyone could get away with singing it!

Looks like the CalMac ferry crossing the Minch on a moderately windy day! :p

My other half is the expert on musicals, I really didn't know where the song came from, although I knew the Liverpool connection. You learn things here.

The picture in my previous post shows two Manly ferries (Circular Quay to Manly) passing each other in opposite directions as they cross in front of the Heads, the relatively narrow 2 km wide opening of Sydney Harbour to the ocean, it can get quite rough for a short stretch there.

As for CalMac, I remember being stranded on the island of Iona for several days one winter, as it was too dangerous for the ferry to run. A novel experience for me, there was no way off, no where to go.

When I see that, I always have to think of my first trip to Helgoland. The waves weren't that big, but when I felt the smell in the ship below, when the first people down there had to throw up, I ran up to the rail very quickly and couldn't leave this rail for the rest of the journey. I think my digestive tract has never been as empty as it was then.:boaa::boaa::boaa:

A heavenly place to be stranded! Just a short crossing from Fionnphort, but it can be very perilous.

Bond girl actress Tanya Roberts dies at 65 :(
Tanya Roberts: Bond girl and Charlie's Angel still alive, agent says

Now that kind of retraction doesn't happen every day -- 2021 starts with a surprise.

She remains in the ICU in a serious condition, he said.
"It does not look good," he told the PA news agency.

Still and all, I hope she'll make it.

Last month died Helen Viola Jackson died at 101 in the state of Missouri.

In 1936, as she was 17 years old, she married the 93 years old James Bolin, who died 3 years later.

Bolin was a Civil War (1860-1865) Union Army veteran. So, Helen Jackson was probably the last widow of a Civil War veteran to die, 160 years after that war had started.

RIP Dawn Wells and Tanya Roberts.

When Gilligan's Islandwas on the air, and when Tanya Roberts was in Tourist Trap--even when she was inSheena and A View To A Kill COVID-19 was unimaginable to most of us.

One thing about Tanya Roberts. I heard that she retired from acting to care for her husband who was dying of cancer. She had a beautiful heart as well as a beautiful face.

The rest of both of them was pretty good as well!
