Capture, torture, and eventual death (the partisans would not keep him alive long) was the only alternative.
True, partisans tortured their captive soldiers and killed them afterwards. As well in the Far East as in Russia, France or other occupied territories.

I had the same thoughts, but mine followed the Shakespearean flavor I saw in Hiroko and Shirley. The end of Hamlet, where the palace floor is littered with bodies, knee-deep in gore!
Do I spot a divide between Anglo-Saxon culture (Shakespeare) and continental culture (put it in an opera) about identical storylines? Anglo-Saxon music has very few opera composers.:icon_writing:

And the continental composers then choose to write a bunch of operas using Shakespeare plays!

To be honest, I have only a moderate taste for opera. To me, it is very like Cricket. Something you sit through, hoping the end will come prematurely.:p

Wow - I don't think there are enough characters left alive to justify a sequel, and the superlatives are pretty much all used up.
An excellent story with lots of high drama - well done, Barb. Here is a scene from the prequel, before it all started... ;)

Happier days when all there was to fear were predatory senior officers, and peepholes in the showers.

Great pic! Barb (center) smiling happily.

“Pay attention now, Tanaka,” he instructed patronizingly, “You are about to witness how an expert conducts an interrogation. The first thing to note is that these prisoners are female. The female sex is inherently weak and fearful, which means ... in the first place ... females are inherently more susceptible to subtle terrorizing tactics. And in the second place, should it become necessary to rough them up or apply a little torture, the female body offers an abundance of private and delicate parts on which to inflict pain and abuse. Got it?"

Again, he checked the mounting of the long 32 cm spike-type bayonet fixed to the end of his Ariska Type 99 rifle. That was the fourth time he had checked on it. And again he studied his victims. His instructions were to first bayonet the one on the right, and then her comrade on the left.

He thought them quite beautiful, despite their disheveled and dirty appearance. It was clear that they had been tortured. He had earlier heard their screams from within the interrogation shed, and intermingled with the filth covering their nude bodies, he could see the dark marks left by the beatings they had received as well as the burn marks on their breasts. He also found himself aroused by their nudity, and the way they squirmed and thrashed about once the cornus had been driven up their asses. He thought it very erotic.

May I introduce you to the current England vs India series?

Well!

It has been quite a ride. A serious tone with so much tragedy and loss, cruelty and even shock. Wragg's loathometer must have hit critical levels, but so much of this was not the work of one eveil man but of the system, the casual cruelty of war and a clash of cultures.

Many little personal touches brought these characters alive for us, made the events all the more sad.

So many of these scenes will stay with us, and some leave us hanging. Bab has escaped death time after time, are we to believe that the end is finally here? Will the Americans and partisans work together or is there a disaster looming?

Is there a postscript? Is this the inevitable end for Lieutenant Moore?

Great work by Madi and Fossy illustrating this story

No. You may not. :mad::rolleyes::facepalm:

It would have done, if Jollyrei hadn't borrowed it!

I reckon 25 at least

Mind you, that might be as much a testament to the power of Barb's writing as to any quarrel I might have with Ohno... well done, Barb!

OK, for the umpteenth time in my life, my curiosity has been raised about how cricket is played. It looks so interesting, and I'm a big baseball fan, so what could go wrong?

Only, once again, my hopes at edification are dashed.

I read the article in the link. Or tried to. I stopped about halfway through. My head hurt.

So I looked up cricket in Wikipedia. I stopped reading about half way through. My head hurt worse.

I mean, if Patrick Stewart chooses to hold a cricket bat in that commercial, it must be a great game! Picard is never wrong!

[Sigh!] I'm gonna stick with my Orioles. They may be cellar-dwellers, but at least I know what the hell is happening. . . .

Hmm, well - there are lots of versions of this humorous explanation of cricket

this one actually does a reasonable job of explaining

At the higher levels it takes longer to play and has more variety than baseball, with a lot of decision making required of the captain in terms of bowling changes and almost infinite variety in fielding positions. The key difference in terms of play is probably that the ball is bounced on the pitch on the way to the batsman, introducing a huge array of possible outcomes that are missing with a ball that arrives on the full. So when you hear about spin or seam bowling, these techniques in part use contact with the pitch to alter the direction of the ball in a controlled way, along with movement in the air.

Is it played in Japan? Yes, though a bit of a niche sport
