I voted against Fritz Mondale in 1976. By 1980 I’d developed a liking for his boss, a dislike intense loathing for Reagan, and voted for him in 1980, and again in 1984.

Reagan checked out in 2004. Fritz outlived the bastard.

Famed musician, composer and songwriter Jim Steinman has died aged 73. Best remembered for such hits as Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell and Bonnie Tyler's Total eclipse Of The Heart to name but two of a long and impressive catalogue of great songs :(

Milva, one of the most unusual Italian singers, also called "La Rossa" (The Redhead) or "the Panther of Goro", died last evening with 81 years after a long illness.

She also was an internationally known interpreter of songs from Bertolt Brecht and most Germans loved her even for all her other songs even in German like these ones, which were hits in Germany:

The first one in German: "Hurray, we are still alive. ... How much had we to go through and we are still alive? ... Never forget: it is not self-evident to be alive, of course!":

"Only when the wind turns around again, you will understand."

Former astronaut Michael Collins (1930-2021). He was part of the Apollo 11 crew (with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin) that made the first walk on the Moon. Collins was Command Module Pilot. The trade off from the method of Lunar Orbit Rendez-Vous, of which the advantage was that it significantly reduced the launch weight of the rocket, was that a crew member would stay behind in the Command Module, while the two others landed on the Moon. On Apollo 11 this was Collins' task. He also faced the risk of having to return to Earth alone, if an accident would happen with the Lunar Module.

Apollo 11 was his second, and last space flight. In July 1966, he had already flown with Gemini X.

From the Apollo 11 crew, only Aldrin is still alive.

Very sad - Collins is never as well-remembered as Armstrong and Aldrin, but he seemed to be happy not to be a national hero (which of course he was, though he rarely acknowledged the fact)

Former NASA Flight Director Gene Krantz once praised Collins as being "the archetypal professor - just the sort of guy you want in your back pocket when things get tight"

Hard to believe he was 90!

Soon after its publication I read
Collins, Michael (1974). Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut's Journeys. New York: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux.
and found it a very engrossing story, with no hint of regrets.
