Some good reading on this topic is the book "Scalp Dance: Indian Warfare on the High Plains, 1865-1879" by Thomas Goodrich. Chapter 8 of the book is titled "A Fate Worse Than Death" and consists of extracts from the recollections of surviving female captives -- as the chapter title indicates, rape features prominently.
