Other Forms Of Execution

Go to CruxDreams.com
There are some weeks I'd found a new astonishing form of execution ; who was knowing it ?:D

Brazen Bull

This is one of the most painful punishments, invented by Perillos of Athens for the tyrant of Sicily, Phalaris. He made a hollow bull, made entirely of brass, and a door on the side. The victim is locked inside the bull and fire is set beneath the bull and the rest is up to your imagination.

It is said that there is a blow-piece within the hollow chamber connected to the mouth of the bull, so when the victim inside screams in agony, the sound would resonate and be translated into the sound of an angry bull on the outside... well I have to say that this is one piece of marvelous invention~

The evil Perillos who suggested this method of killing to his master Phalaris was ordered to enter the bull and test the sound system, and once he entered he was locked within and the fire was set. But before he could die Phalaris freed him. Thinking that he would receive rewards for his invention, instead he was brought to a hill and killed.

Perillos being forced into the bull

There were several saints martyred in this way, most notably Saint Eustace, who was roasted in the Brazen Bull with his wife and children =( well that's really painful for the kids...

"Saint Dorothy" ???!!!
I doubt that she could be that ....:D

I think there is a thread about Sebastian around and had some females in it (Sebastianas?)

Found some at Krypta. Two saints, Christina of Tyrus(or Bolsena) & Sabastiana are supposed to be martyred this way.

Very appropriate for the coming feast of St Sebastian

unrelated, here are some drownings

Two saints, Christina of Tyrus(or Bolsena)

Christina really had the full menu,
here's my note from Milestones:

24th June: Christina, virgin martyr (300) at Tyro, a city which formerly stood on an island in the lake of Bolsena in northern Lazio. She was the daughter of a rich and powerful magistrate named Urban. She became a Christian at a young age, being given the baptismal name Christina. Her father, who was deep into heathenism, had a number of golden idols which she destroyed and distributed the pieces among the poor. Infuriated by this, Urban became the persecutor of his own daughter. Her Passion is a delightful catalogue of vigorous tortures, during which the girl of course showed indomitable courage and an irritating enthusiasm for singing psalms. She was:
(1) beaten with rods over her whole body;
(2) tortured with sharp iron hooks and metal combs enlarging her wounds;
(3) lashed with a scourge armed with nails on the thongs, so pieces of her flesh were ripped out;
(4) bound to either a rack or a wheel (versions differ, either would appeal to a keen VM), basted with oil, and stretched or turned over a roasting fire; during this, several onlookers were burnt by the fire;
(5) thrown into a dungeon; an angel came and healed her wounds, and urged her to persevere with another round of exciting punishment;
(6) weighted with a heavy stone tied about her neck and thrown into the lake of Bolsena, but she was saved by the same angel;
(7) thrown into the dungeon for another night; during the night, her father died of apoplexy;
(8) laid in an iron cradle full of boiling oil and tar, by Dio, the judge who had succeeded her father; she survived for several hours, and then caused the idol she was being urged to worship to disintegrate; Dio thereupon likewise died of apoplexy;
(9) thrown into a furnace by Dio's successor Julian, she remained there for five days;
(10) thrown in a cave full of snakes;
(11) breasts torn off and tongue ripped out, to try and shut her up – failed;
(12) tied to a stake and shot with arrows, one of which went through her heart and managed to kill her – phew!
Her relics are now at Palermo in Sicily, but her tomb is still in a catacomb at Bolsena.

I agree with Darknessmonger, quite a sadistic angel!

Well, Actually in the acts of martyrs there was a prohibition on the christians to deliver themselves to the authorities, as it was sometimes an act of pride more of giving testimony, and indeed some of those that approached the martyrdom with pride couldn't cope with the tortures and became lapsis

in a macho, male-dominated world,
courting martyrdom was one thing 'free' women could do to prove their physical and mental strength,
and, yes, both the pagan authorities and the church hierarchy found that very disturbing.
But Christina's story is obviously a mediaeval legend that brings in every tasty torture they could think of,
a bit like our tales here on the Forums!
